10 Essential Tips Beginner Surfers Should Know

  • September 29, 2021
  • Jules

If surfing is one of the things to do on your bucket list, it’s never too late to start now! Surfing is not something you’ll just pick up over time, it takes several hours of practice to perfect this sport.

With over 35 million surfers worldwide, it is considered one of the most exciting sports. With several popular surfing destinations in the world, more and more people are falling in love with surfing. Whether you are interested in competing in competitions or just catching waves over the weekend after a long week’s work.

So before you grab on to your surfboard and head out to the ocean, here are a few beginners tips that every beginner surfer should know:

Do Your Research

Most people directly assume that surfing is just standing on a board and flowing with the waves. If you have no prior surfing, you must do your research before heading out to the dangerous ocean as it can result in a bad surf experience.

Find a Coach

Learning to surf can be daunting and doing it all by yourself just increases the chances of something bad happening. Having an experienced or advanced surfer train and guide you will protect you from injuries. If you are looking for an accelerated surf program, head over to this article that will get you surfing in 12 weeks!

Find the Right Location

As a newbie, start surfing where there are fewer people around. Keep in mind that waves are unpredictable, choosing locations with steady and smooth flowing waves will help you learn surfing faster. If looking for beaches to surf in New Zealand, use this simple guide here.

A Big Surfboard

It is always good to have more than one surfboard that is suitable for different-sized waves. That being said, you must start with a big surfboard as it gives you more room to balance and control your board. Yes, the shortboards are cool and look great but learn to catch waves first and then move on to different surfboards.

Wax your Board

Before you head out to sea, always remember to wax your board. A good board wax will ensure that you have all the necessary grip when surfing. A simple wax job can make all the difference in your surfing session.

Surf Swimwear

Before heading to the ocean, make sure that you are equipped with all the necessary for your surfing session. Having the right surf swimwear can really make a difference. You want something that not only looks good, but also feels comfortable, flexible, protects you from the sun and stays put while you’re out there riding the waves.

Leash up

Whether you are a beginner or advanced surfer, a leash is one of the most important portions of your surf gear. A leash makes sure that you never lose your board in the ocean. Apart from losing your board, it also protects other surfers from colliding with it while they surf.

Warm-Up

If it’s your first time at the beach with your very own surfboard, rushing into the water is normal. But it is advisable to spend some time on land before heading to the ocean. This allows you to warm up, stretch, and recheck your gear before catching your wave. This is one good habit that will stay with you forever.

Learn your Swells

Understanding the different types of waves is important as it helps you avoid big and risky waves. As a beginner surfing on beach breaks is the best option as they are sandy bottom and protect you from any serious injuries.

Surf Etiquette

No matter where you surf, you don’t want to get on the bitter side of other surfers around. The best way to avoid these mistakes is by understanding surf etiquettes, which are more like an unwritten code between surfers.

Above all, be yourself and have fun! Even though the ocean can be a dangerous place by maintaining safety protocols, you can learn to surf better and faster.

If you are looking for an excellent surfing destination, Tamraght village in Morocco is an excellent surfing location to catch some beautiful waves.
