Safari Holidays - Holiday Activity Guide

PureTravel says:
"To experience an African safari holiday, such as a Masai Mara safari, is to experience one of the most exciting holidays on offer. Searching out the "Big 5" - Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Buffalo and Rhino - in the break-taking landscapes of Africa is a memory never to be forgotten. There are different ways to experience safari, from remote camps to large lodges, private minibus to shared vehicles, drive-in or fly-in. The styles vary depending on the country, region and time of year. The excitement of looking out for the big cats and other large animals is the same however you travel and is something you will never forget."

Suggested Safari Holidays

Kruger National Park, South Africa.
The Kruger National Park in South Africa is home to more species of mammals, birds and reptiles than any other reserve in all of Africa. In the Kruger, you are sure to see the “Big Five,” which include the lion, hippo, leopard, cape buffalo, and rhinoceros. These animals are known as the Big Five because big game hunters have named them the five most difficult species of animals to hunt on foot, as well as some of the most dangerous animals to hunt. In addition to the Big Five, Kruger is home to cheetah, zebra, wildebeest, impalas, eland, the endangered African wild dog and over 3,000 crocodiles.

The Masai Mara Reserve, Kenya.
In all of Africa, Kenya’s Masai Mara Reserve is the most popular safari destination. On a Masai Mara safari you can finde all members of the “Big Five,” as well as see firsthand the incredible yearly migration of millions of wildebeest, Thompson’s gazelle and zebra. The annual migration takes places from July until October, and is one of the largest and most famous migrations of mammals in the world.

On a Masai Mara holiday you can see a large population of big cats including lions and chettah. The plains are also home to hippos, rhinos, hyenas, impalas, Roan antelope, common giraffes, as well as the mara Masai giraffe.

The Okavango Delta, Botswana.
The Okavango River in Botswana is the largest river in the world that does not run out into the sea. Rising in the Highlands of Angola it runs down and becomes trapped in the lowlands of Botswana, creating a vast area of marsh, wetlands and rivers that is a haven fo wildlife.

It is home to all the big 5, as well as hippos and a myriad of colourful birdlife. Within the Okavango Delta lie some of the most luxurious and intimaye safari lodges to be found anywhere in the world.

Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania.
As is name suggests the Ngorongoro Crater is the remains of a dormant volcano, the floor of whose crater has become a haven for the animals of the plains of Africa. No development is allowed in the Crater itself, meaninmg that the lodges are up on its rim, giving stunning views out over the reserve. Everyday you must drive down into the Crater, returning in the evening. It is rated as one of the most spectacular safari experiences combining the look and feel of Africa with exceptional game-viewing.
