American Volcanoes Most Likely To Erupt Soon

  • June 25, 2009
  • admin

Kilauea in Hawaii is the most active volcano on earth! It’s also a tourist hotspot with 2.6 million visitors a year and the word ‘kilauea’ means ‘spewing’ in Hawaiian. Kilauea has been constantly spewing lava since January 1983 and a strong eruption could happen soon!

Mount Baker volcano in Washington State, popular with winter sports enthusiasts, is being closely watched for any changes in activity. Although it’s been pretty dormant of late, if it does spark into action then Washington residents would need to worry. There would also be a whole load of melted ice and snow to contend with.

Another active American volcano with bite in Washington State is Mount Rainier and an eruption could cause problems in the lowland areas including Seattle. The odds of eruption seem slim, with the last being 2,200 years ago, but you can never be too sure!

The earth’s largest volcano, Mauna Loa, is in Hawaii. It has been erupting for 700,000 years although the last big one was 1984.

So as the world gets warmer and with seismic activity on the increase, you never know where the next big eruption will be! Adventure seeking tourists tramping up these active volcanoes in their flip flops might get a bit more than they bargained for soon!
