9 Ways To Save Money With Green Travel

  • June 5, 2009
  • admin

Do your bit for the environment by following our tips on green travel and you could save some money as well!

Guidebooks – Try to borrow any guidebooks you’ll need from friends or your local library. Or if you have bought one, don’t let it gather dust and get outdated – either sell it or give it to a charity shop.

Travel Size Products – Instead of paying for miniature versions of your favorite toiletries and items, and clogging up landfill sites, instead buy a set of refillable travel bottles and fill with your own products. Just remember to label the bottles to avoid any confusion!

Go Direct – By booking your next trip direct with the people based in your destination your money will benefit those local communities and countries that you will be visiting. You will also save money and get a more individual tour.

Packing – Consider what you really need to take and the less you pack the lighter you mode of transport will be (and so use less fuel) and you’ll avoid hideous airline baggage charges!

Planning – Once in your destination, a little planning can go a long way. Try to group your sightseeing into areas to cut down on transportation costs, fuel and money. You can also plan walking or cycling tours in your destination, which is a great way to really get to know an area.

A member of the PureTravel team is a huge fan of spreadsheets and is well known for producing holiday spreadsheet itineraries which although amusing to colleagues is actually very handy and organized!

Car Hire – Make your car hire choice a small economical car or a hybrid. As well as saving money on fuel and rental costs, you will also be able to bag smaller parking spaces.

Road Trips – Prepare for your road trip and cut down on fuel costs by checking your tire pressures, clearing your vehicle of any unnecessary loads and driving like you’re on your test again!

Shop Local – In your destination shop locally for food, drinks and gifts and try to source items that were grown or produced locally. Also check out the local markets and perfect your bartering skills!

Re-use – You probably already cut down on plastic bottles and bags when at home so make sure when traveling that you carry your own reusable bag and water bottle which can be topped up on your journey either by tap or supersize bottle.
