5 unique ideas for an active holiday

  • April 22, 2022
  • Jules

Everyone needs to recharge their batteries once in a while during a lush holiday. For some of us this may mean lying on the beach somewhere in the Mediterranean and soaking up the sun. Others, however, prefer spending their holidays in a much more active way – this especially tends to be the case for people working office jobs, which require sitting at the table for long hours. So, if you’re planning a holiday and are lacking inspiration on how to spend it in an active way, here are 5 great ideas.

Walking holidays

Walking holidays are increasingly popular across the globe, with people of all ages and backgrounds recognising the great aspects of this active holiday. There are many well-known walking holiday routes, but one of the oldest and most popular is the Camino de Santiago Spain route. This is a perfect opportunity for people to not only stay active on their holiday but also get back in touch with nature, visit some of the most famous tourist attractions and enjoy the warm Spanish sun. However, if Camino walk does not sound appealing to you, there are many other routes in other countries, varying in landscapes, weather conditions and difficulty levels.

Fitness holidays

If you are someone who prefers to settle in a single place for your holiday, yet still want to be active, there are some great fitness holiday options in various locations. You may choose a hotel that has a variety of sports facilities, such as tennis, golf, snooker and so on. These types of resorts also tend to do dedicated fitness classes everyday, including yoga sessions, pilates, dancing and many others. This is a great option for a balanced holiday, which allows you to stay active in the daytime and enjoy the sun as well as local cuisine in the afternoons.

Water sports holidays

Water sports is one of the most popular holiday activities. There are so many different options you may get active with, including snorkelling, kayaking, surfing, scuba diving, canyoning and many more. If you are looking to try some new things and have an adventurous time, you could base your whole holiday around water sports activities. Choose a hotel or a resort that is close to the beach or a lake and find out what water sports they offer.

Cycling holidays

Similarly to walking holidays, cycling holidays allow you to challenge yourself by spending your holiday travelling from one location to another. This is a great way to cover a much longer route compared to walking and, therefore, see many more locations and tourist attractions during your holiday. You may choose to camp during your holiday or use local hotels and B&Bs, however, keep in mind that the heavier your pack, the higher the difficulty level it will be. This is especially the case if you choose to cycle in a mountainous area, which will be more challenging – but more rewarding too!

Horse-riding holidays

For all the animal lovers out there, a horse-riding holiday could be a unique and unusual way to spend your leisure time. This is an amazing opportunity to learn something new – in this case, to ride a horse all by yourself. You would start by having some training sessions with a professional and, by the end of your holiday, you may be riding a horse alongside the local beach. Not only are horses amazing and intelligent animals to get to know better, but they are typically held in remote farms somewhere in the countryside, so the whole environment is incredibly relaxing for a holiday.
