There’s nothing quite like a walking trail. You can spend days wandering through nature and admiring the world around you. Yes, some of them can be hard work but for every step you take you get rewarded with some of the most spectacular sights in the whole world.
West Highland Way, Scotland
There are so many hiking holidays in the UK. One of the best ones you can do is the West Highland Way in Scotland. It is 96 miles long and goes from Milngavie to Fort William. It shows some of the best Scottish scenery the country has to offer, from fairytale-esque forests to majestic mountains and lochs. There are several routes you can take – you can make it as short or as long as you like.
Inca Trail, Peru
The Inca Trail in Peru is arguably the most famous walking trail in the world so we had to include it. It’s on so many people’s bucket lists, and it isn’t hard to understand why. It is a four-day hike which takes you through some stunning scenery and climaxing into the historic marvel of Machu Picchu. It isn’t the easiest of walking holidays but you are rewarded with views that will stay with you for a lifetime.
Tongariro Alpine Crossing, New Zealand
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is referred to as the world’s best day walk. It is a steep walk but everyone who walks it says it’s completely worth it. From the iconic emerald lakes to the sweeping vistas of New Zealand countryside, you’ll find yourself stopping often to photograph these postcard-worthy views. You should be able to spot an active crater, too. Weather changes wildly here so make sure you’re prepared to face the elements.
GR20, France
The GR20 is one of the most exhilarating long-distance walks in the world. It requires past mountain walking experience so make sure to train before you attempt it. Walking does wonders for your health, both physically and mentally. You’ll feel the benefit as you take in all the majestic views of the French mountains and countryside.
Everest Base Camp, Nepal
Another popular bucket list trek: Mount Everest. This two – three-week trek takes you up some breathtakingly beautiful scenery. It can be quite literally breathtaking as you ascend 18,193ft. The trail is walked by thousands of walkers a year so be wary of crowds during the peak season. Nonetheless, if you want to say you’ve stood at the base of the world’s highest mountain, you shouldn’t let fear of fellow trekkers get in your way.
Walking holidays are a fantastic way for you to explore and enjoy nature in all its glory. From the lochs of Scotland to the highest mountain in the world – there are so many adventures out there. Where’s your dream destination for a hiking holiday?
