8 Tips For Protecting Your RV Windshield

  • August 15, 2022
  • Robert

The windshield is one of an RV vehicle’s most vital parts in protecting the driver and passengers. Generally, it paves the way for a clear, unobstructed view of the road. It protects the driver and passengers from dirt, rain, hail, and debris. In addition, it prevents the passengers from being ejected from the RV if accidents happen.

Yet, like any portion of an RV, windshields may break or crack. Suppose you’re an RV owner. In that case, you may consider identifying ways to protect your windshield from anything that could damage it. For that purpose, here’s an article to guide you. So, read on!

  1. Repair The Windshield Immediately

If you notice a crack or chip in your windshield, you may need to bring your RV to the nearest windshield repair center at the soonest possible time. Ignoring even the most minor damage may result in more complex windshield issues, such as the total structural damage to the windshield.

If your windshield’s structural integrity has been dramatically affected, the best step to take is to replace the windshield. Using the damaged windshield may injure people, should it shatter completely. If you’re in Phoenix, you may go to RV windshield replacement Phoenix or similar establishments.

2. Monitor The Temperature

Before you set your RV for the road, you may need to check the prevalent weather on your road trip. You may look into the weather forecast, specifically the temperature, to see if it’d fluctuate during your chosen day. If it does, you may reset your road trip to another day.

The explanation is that the fluctuation or the sudden temperature changes may cause the windshield to expand or contract. When this happens, the windshield may crack or chip. Apart from this, prolonged exposure to heat may weaken the structural integrity of the windshield, so it’s advisable to cover it with shades.

3. Keep The Windshield Clean

The windshield is an easy target for rocks and mud, especially on a rainy day. The windshield usually gathers dirt, grime, bugs, and pollen on its surface. Because of this, the glass may have scratches and scrapes when the wiper drags the dirt across the windshield. Repeated scraping may entirely damage the windshield and may require windshield repair over time.

To prevent this, you must clean the windshield after a road trip. You may use a water hose or a power washer to remove the dirt from the windshield. However, ensure that you only spray water gently to avoid damaging the glass. Then, you may use a microfiber cloth soaked in a mild alcohol solution to dry the windshield. The fabric will remove the excess dirt, while the alcohol will get rid of the fogginess.

4. Drive Slowly On Rough Roads

In most cases, debris flings when vehicles rush across a muddy and challenging road. To avoid it, one must drive slowly and keep a safe distance from the car in front and back. This is an excellent way to prevent kicked-up rocks and debris.

5. Avoid Driving In Early Spring Or After A Storm

Winter generally leaves debris and rock chips that an RV owner needs to avoid. The same goes for the days after a storm. Because of this, an RV owner should ensure first that the road has been cleaned and the ice has melted before hitting the first-ever road trip of the year.

6. Keep Your RV In A Reliable Storage During Stormy Weather

Keeping your RV in reliable storage is necessary during inclement weather, such as hailstorms. Not only does it protect the windshield from possible damage, but it also safekeeps the entire vehicle. It’s also a must for every RV owner to monitor the weather forecast and watch out for any storm.

7. Park In A Debris-Free Space

Before you park your RV, you need to check the space to see if it’s free from any debris that may fall not just into the windshield but also into the entire vehicle. This way, your windshield will be safe from chips, cracks, and even shattering, and your car will be safe from dents and other types of damage.

8. Replace Wipers Regularly

Ideally, you need to replace your wipers every two years. This way, your windshield will be free from the chips and scratches caused by worn-and-torn blades. In addition, old wipers tend to gather dirt that may also graze and scrape the windshield, damaging the windshield.

Wrapping Up

The RV windshield is one of the essential parts of the vehicle. It keeps the vehicle safe and protected from debris and damage. In addition, it also protects the driver and passengers for the same reason. Suppose you want to ensure that your windshield is protected at all times. In that case, you may read this article and apply the insights and theories you think will benefit your windshield.
