Beyond Credit Cards: 5 Ways to Pay for Flights and Hotels

  • October 13, 2026
  • Jules

Finding a good deal on flights and hotels is one thing. Figuring out how to pay for the trip is another, especially when you’re booking for a family or planning a longer vacation.

Most travelers still reach for a credit or debit card, but there are more options worth considering. You can split bookings into installments, pay with cryptocurrency, use a digital wallet, or choose a travel card designed for spending abroad.

None of these methods is necessarily better than a regular credit card. It depends on where you’re going, how much you’re spending, and what works for your budget.

Here’s how the main options compare.

Split Your Travel Costs Into Installments

Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) has become a popular way to spread the cost of larger purchases, and some travel booking websites now support it for flights and hotels.

Services such as Sezzle, PayPal Pay in 4, Affirm, and Klarna offer installment plans to eligible customers. Some let you pay in four installments over six weeks, while others offer longer repayment periods that may include interest.

Take a $600 round-trip flight. With an interest-free four-payment plan, you’d pay $150 at checkout, followed by three payments of $150. A $900 hotel booking would work out to four payments of $225.

The advantage is that you don’t have to cover the entire cost on the day you book.

Credit checks are another consideration. Some short-term BNPL plans use soft credit inquiries that won’t affect your credit score. Travelers looking to book flights without a hard credit check can explore these options, although approval depends on the provider and the individual transaction.

PayPal Pay in 4, for example, allows eligible US customers to split qualifying purchases into four interest-free payments. Sezzle offers a similar payment structure, though additional fees may apply depending on the plan.

It’s important to distinguish payment approval from booking confirmation. Even if a financing provider approves your transaction, you should still make sure you’ve received your hotel confirmation or airline ticket before considering the reservation complete.

BNPL can be useful when you’re booking ahead and prefer to spread the cost over several paychecks. Just remember that smaller payments don’t make the trip cheaper. You’re still responsible for the full amount, along with any applicable fees or interest.

Paying for Flights and Hotels With Cryptocurrency

Cryptocurrency is another payment option that’s becoming more practical for travel.

Some booking platforms now accept Bitcoin, Ethereum, USDT, USDC, and other digital currencies for flights and accommodation.

For travelers who already hold cryptocurrency, the appeal is straightforward. Rather than selling their digital assets, transferring funds to a bank account, and then paying for a booking, they may be able to pay directly.

Consider someone who receives part of their freelance income in USDT. If they want to book a flight or hotel, using a travel platform that accepts USDT can save them the extra step of converting those funds before making the purchase.

The benefit isn’t necessarily a lower price. It’s the convenience of using money they already hold.

Stablecoins can also be useful for international travelers who regularly deal with different currencies. However, crypto payments aren’t automatically free of conversion costs. Network fees, exchange rates, and payment processing charges can affect the final amount.

Transaction speed depends on the cryptocurrency and payment network. Some payments are confirmed quickly, while others take longer.

There are tax considerations too. In the United States, spending cryptocurrency can result in a taxable gain or loss, even when you’re simply using it to purchase a service.

Another practical detail is refunds. If you cancel a hotel booking paid with cryptocurrency, the refund process may differ from a card transaction. Some platforms refund the original cryptocurrency amount, while others calculate refunds based on the value of the booking. Check the provider’s policy before paying.

For people who already use digital assets, cryptocurrency offers a useful alternative. For everyone else, a conventional payment method may still be simpler.

Digital Wallets Make Booking Easier

Apple Pay and Google Pay have made online checkout much more convenient, particularly when booking from a phone.

Instead of typing your card details every time, you can authorize a payment using information already stored in your digital wallet.

This saves a few steps and can provide additional security.

Most major digital wallets use tokenization, meaning the merchant receives a secure payment token rather than your actual card number. Depending on your device, you may also need to confirm the transaction using facial recognition, a fingerprint, or a passcode.

For someone comparing hotel rates on their phone, being able to complete checkout without finding their physical card is a welcome convenience.

However, a digital wallet doesn’t necessarily change how much you pay.

If your linked credit card charges foreign transaction fees, those charges may still apply. The wallet is simply another way to use the card.

Availability also varies between booking websites. Some support Apple Pay or Google Pay directly, while others only accept traditional card payments.

Digital wallets are best viewed as a convenience and security feature rather than a way to save money on travel.

Travel Cards and Spending Abroad

Paying for flights and hotels is only part of the expense. Once you arrive, you’ll still need to cover meals, transportation, shopping, and activities.

If you’re traveling internationally, the card you use for those purchases can make a difference.

Services such as Wise and Revolut offer multi-currency accounts and international payment features. Depending on your account and location, you may be able to hold different currencies, exchange money, and spend abroad using a physical or virtual card.

Imagine spending a week in London followed by a few days in Paris. Instead of repeatedly exchanging money through your bank, a multi-currency account may make it easier to manage purchases in pounds and euros.

But don’t assume these services are always cheaper.

Fees vary depending on the currency, account type, and transaction. Some providers charge additional fees for certain exchanges or ATM withdrawals.

It’s also worth comparing them with traditional travel credit cards. Several cards offer no foreign transaction fees, and some include rewards, travel insurance benefits, or purchase protections.

Before leaving, check what your current card charges. You may already have a good option without opening another account.

Paying for Hotels in Installments

Accommodation can be one of the largest expenses on a trip, particularly for families booking several nights at a resort or hotel.

This is where installment payments can be particularly useful.

Suppose you’re planning a family vacation and find a hotel stay costing $1,200. With an approved interest-free four-payment plan and no additional fees, you could pay $300 at booking and the remaining $900 over the following six weeks.

For someone paid every two weeks, that schedule may be easier to manage than one large payment.

Some booking platforms offer installment options directly at checkout. Travorio, for example, allows eligible travelers to pay later for hotel stays through supported services such as Sezzle and PayPal Pay Later.

The important thing is to compare the actual booking terms, not just the payment schedule.

A hotel room that costs $950 and must be paid upfront may still be a better deal than the same room offered for $1,100 in installments.

Cancellation policies matter just as much.

Paying over time doesn’t make a non-refundable reservation refundable. If you cancel a booking that qualifies for a refund, the booking platform and payment provider may need time to process it and adjust your remaining installments.

It’s worth checking those details before confirming the reservation, especially if your travel dates might change.

Which Payment Method Should You Choose?

There isn’t one payment method that makes sense for every traveler.

For a short weekend trip, a regular debit or credit card may be the easiest choice. If you’ve already budgeted for the trip, there’s little reason to complicate the payment process.

For a more expensive family vacation, an interest-free installment plan could help spread the cost without requiring one large upfront payment. The key is making sure the repayments fit your budget.

International travelers may benefit from a card without foreign transaction fees or a multi-currency account for spending at their destination.

Business travelers often prefer credit cards because they simplify expense tracking and may offer rewards or travel protections.

And if you already hold Bitcoin or stablecoins, a booking platform that accepts cryptocurrency may be a convenient alternative to converting those funds first.

You can also combine payment methods. There’s nothing unusual about paying for flights with a credit card, booking a hotel through an installment plan, and using a travel card for expenses once you arrive.

Before choosing, consider the total cost, repayment terms, cancellation conditions, and any additional fees.

A Few Things Worth Checking Before You Book

Whatever payment method you choose, don’t overlook the basics.

Make sure the final price includes taxes and booking fees. Read the cancellation conditions, particularly when reserving a non-refundable room. And if you’re paying in installments, check the repayment dates rather than assuming you’ll have plenty of time to pay.

If you’re using cryptocurrency, confirm the currency and blockchain network before sending funds. Crypto transactions generally can’t be reversed in the same way as card payments.

Finally, keep your booking confirmation and payment records. If there’s ever a cancellation, refund, or payment issue, having those details available makes resolving it much easier.

Final Thoughts

Credit cards are still a good choice for many travelers, especially when they offer rewards, fraud protection, and no foreign transaction fees.

But they aren’t the only option anymore.

Installment payments can help manage larger travel expenses. Digital wallets make checkout easier. Travel cards can be useful abroad, while cryptocurrency gives digital asset holders another way to book flights and hotels.

The best approach is to start with the trip itself. Find a good price, understand the booking conditions, and make sure the total cost fits your budget.

Once you’ve done that, choose the payment method that works best for you. A little flexibility at checkout can be helpful, as long as it doesn’t come at the expense of a good deal.
