Work Hard, Ski Harder but with Helmets

  • May 24, 2022

The winter season is often associated with gloom and melancholy. However, that is not entirely true. The most important merry thing about winter is Christmas. Apart from Christmas, many other activities bring out the joy in winter. The greatest example is winter sports.

Listing out the types of winter sports would take ages to complete. However, some noteworthy names are skiing and snowboarding.

Skiing and Snowboarding: A comparison

Skiing and snowboarding are essentially forms of transportation by gliding over snow. The primary difference between them is the equipment used. While skiing uses the skis to glide, snowboarding as the name suggests uses a board for gliding over the snow. Skiing has been in history for about five millennia. Snowboarding has been in the headlines since the 1960s and is kind of an offshoot of skiing itself.

These two sports have ample similarities amongst their differences as well. The greatest one is the gears. Since both the sports involve snow and cold, having warm gears are equally important for both of them. As both of them involve height and speed, protective headgear, AKA ski helmet is necessary as well. With the increase in the accidents that happen in these activities, ski helmets have become an essential part of both these sports.

Ski Helmets: A summary

Helmets have been saving humankind from cranial and brain injuries for a long time. During medieval times, they were worn by warriors and soldiers to protect their heads during fights and combats. With the advent of time, these protective headgears became a household item for use wherever dangers to the head had been identified, like construction sites, racing, factories, etc.

As mentioned earlier, both skiing and snowboarding involve risks owing to altitudes and velocity. Therefore, ski helmets are needed when these sports are played. The use of ski helmets was not prevalent until the 2000s. During the last decade, more and more skiers & snowboarders started to opt-in for ski helmets.

If we consider the data related to the head injuries caused by accidents during skiing and snowboarding, it would be scary. These accidents happen mainly when the players strike their heads in snow or bang into other players and some solid objects in their path. These data have increased a lot of awareness amongst the skiers and skateboarders along with the various associations and organizations involved in these two sports.

The ranges and styles of ski helmets that are available over the markets are countless. They are all the more attractive for the kids since many countries, states, and ski resorts make them mandatory for the kids. The salient features in the build of a ski helmet include an outer hard shell usually made of durable plastic or resin with inner padding.

Many add-ons are available as well, keeping in line with the fashion and trends outlook, such as mounts for goggles and cameras, vents for headphones and earmuffs, etc. However, we must remember that ski helmets allow us to have the fun out of these sports with definite protection.
