Cote d’Ivoire Holidays – Tours & Adventure Travel Guide

PureTravel Says
“Although Cote d’Ivoire is a very small African country, it has a richness of culture and natural attractions that can’t be denied. Visiting the historic sights are enlightening to those adventurers who want to see every corner of the world and learn more about the development of this fascinating country. Don’t miss visiting the gorgeous beaches on the coast, the Taï National Park with its primary rainforest, or the stunning Mosque in Yamoussoukro.”

Cote d’Ivoire Holiday Highlights

History & Culture – Cote d’Ivoire gained independence from France in 1960 and Yamoussoukro is the capital city. Abidjan is the largest city in Cote d’Ivoire and you will find exploring the colorful market in the heart of this vibrant city provides a real feel for this remarkable culture. In Treichville, you will also find places to relax with some good local food and drink. See the Ifon Museum and the National Museum, both containing statues, ivory and many historical artifacts. In Yamoussoukro, approximately 143 miles north of Abidjan, travelers will find the Mosque and must stop and visit the Palace and Plantations of the President. The stained glass at the Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix will take your breath away.

Walking, Trekking and Hiking – In the west, near Man, also called “the city of eighteen mountains,” there are opportunities to walk, trek and hike. It is a good idea to use a local specialist guide to assist you.

Sightseeing – Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1982, Taï National Park with its rainforests has many sights to see. Another famous National Park to visit is Comoe National Park where wild animals can be viewed, and a stop at the Mount Nimba Strict Nature Reserve is a must. In the west part of Cote d'Ivoire, Man is a popular town that attracts many visitors, as well as the villages of Gouessesso and Biankouma.

Safari – What could be more exciting than a safari through the wild jungle? You can arrange your adventure in the residential area of Abidjan, the Cocody-les-Deux plateau. Go for 2 or 3 days and take in this wild and rugged land. See African wildlife such as buffalo, lions and elephants.

Wildlife & Nature – No African holiday to Cote d’Ivoire would be complete without seeing the incredible animals that make this land their home. At Comoë National Park, visitors can view waterbucks, hippos and lions. About an hour’s trip outside Yamoussoukro you’ll find The Abokouamekro Game Reserve. In Taï National Park you’ll discover the endangered species of the Colobus monkeys and the Pygmy Hippopotamus. You can perhaps even catch a glimpse of leopards and chimpanzees.

Water Sports – Assouinde is a popular beach resort in Cote d’Ivoire and close to a popular attraction called Tiagba, a stilt town. Grand Bassam has wonderful sandy beaches. You can fish or go boating on the coast near Abidjan. Fishing is great on the coast or in the lagoons. You can catch red carp, mullet, sole and barracuda. Korhogo is another great fishing area.

When To Go

December to February is a good time to visit. Inland, any time between August and February is good, (it’s hotter and rainier from March to July). On the coast, the weather is most comfortable between December to March and July to September. The interior of the country and the north have warmer days generally in the 80sF, around 28-32C, cooler nights and relatively less humidity. The climate can be hot and sticky at times.

Top Tips

  • Before leaving check your country’s requirements for vaccinations.
  • The use of the name Ivory Coast in English is not used as the French name Côte d'Ivoire is preferred.
  • Cote d’Ivoire has been involved in civil unrest and it is advisable to check the latest advice prior to travel.
