Discover Paphos; An ancient historical jewel

  • March 15, 2012

A trip to Paphos in Cyprus practically guarantees a memorable, relaxing holiday. As the legendary birthplace of the Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, this coastal, Mediterranean city is filled with history and romance. There is sprawling countryside to explore, adventure activities galore and an abundance of ancient historical sights.

When arriving in the city, many opt for flying to Paphos direct from their home country, as the city is home to Cyprus’ second largest airport. Many cruise ships also dock in Paphos (also known locally as Pafos or Pathos), giving visitors the option to spend their port time exploring the city’s top tourist attractions.

Tourist Attractions

With a history that dates as far back as the 12th century BC and beyond, ancient relics abound in Paphos. Indeed, the bulk of the district has been declared a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site.

Among these are:
– Byzantine Museum
– House of Dionysus
– House of Theseus
– Panayia Chrysopolitissa Church
– Paphos Castle
– The Rock of Aphrodite
– Saint Solomoni Church
– Saranta Kolones
– Tombs of the Kings
– Yeroskipou

Along with the Byzantine Museum are several other museums open to the public. Among these are the museum of St. Neophytos Monastery and the Omodos museum.

For those interested in natural wonders, The Adonis Baths are a popular tourist destination due to the beauty of the baths and waterfall as well as the myth that surround them. Legend states that women who wish to have children can become fertile by swimming in the blue waters. Others may be interested in the hiking adventures and wildlife spotting offered at the Akamas Peninsula.

Old Paphos

Only 10 miles from Paphos is the village of Kouklia, which is built on the site of Old Paphos. Here, visitors will find the ruins of the Temple of Aphrodite and the natural beauty of Petra tou Romiou. An archaeological museum also exists that contains artifacts from the area.

Resort Areas

Tourism is the top trade in Paphos due to the warm climate and welcoming atmosphere. Resorts abound so that guests can holiday in luxury. The major resort areas in Paphos are: Aphrodite Hills, Coral Bay, Kato Paphos and Latchi.
