PureTravel Launches Travel Writing Competition 2014

  • February 27, 2014
  • Jules

We’re delighted to launch our fifth annual Travel Writing Competition and once again, we have a superb prize on offer!

Tell us about your most Breathtaking Travel Moment…

This year our theme is based around your most breathtaking travel moment. Whether you stumbled on a stunning view or glimpsed a long-lost ruin. Perhaps you bumped into someone unexpectedly or were shown kindness by a stranger. Maybe you had an intricate travel plan come to fruition or you simply slipped into some icy water.

Make us really feel the moment with you.

Competition Prize

We are offering a superb prize of £1,000 / US$1,500 for the winning entry plus the opportunity to see your tale in print in a future edition of the well-respected Geographical magazine, the official magazine of the Royal Geographical Society. Full details are within our Prizes section.

How to Enter

Entries should be 350+ words in length and your own original work. Please give your article a title.

Entries should be sent via email to: competition@ along with your name, email address and telephone number by midnight GMT on 31 October 2014. All entries will be posted on the PureTravel website.

Please also read the full terms and conditions.

Previous Winners

Last year’s winner, Suzy Pope won with her inspiring tale Once Bitten, which is published in the April 2014 edition of ‘Geographical’, the Magazine of the Royal Geographical Society. Chief judge Jeremy Lazell said “ “The journey is the thing,” wrote Homer, and although he probably wasn’t thinking Ryanair from Glasgow Prestwick to Stansted, the truth still holds: it’s not always the Taj Mahal that blows you away, sometimes it’s the rickshaw taking there.”

The winning entry in 2012 was Flat and out in LA by S Ellisar and it perfectly captured the theme of “The place you didn’t want to be”.

Highway 14 revisited by S Clarke was the winning entry in 2011 with the beautiful piece on the theme of the most memorable “Travel Encounter”.

And in 2010, the winning “Travel Moment” came from R Bass with the entry title The Pelicans.

We share all major updates here on our blog (an RSS feed is available) and also on our twitter and Facebook channels – follow us and spread the word to make 2014 bigger and better!

Good luck – we really look forward to reading all the entries again this year!
