‘Travel more’ is on most people’s list of resolutions. If this is you but you’re not sure where to start, then here are some of the best places to backpack in 2026 – so you’ll have no excuse not to start your resolutions this time!
Vietnam
Vietnam has always been a popular choice for backpackers and that won’t be changing in 2026. From spectacular views and a diverse array of landscapes to irresistible street food, Vietnam has a lot to offer for backpackers.
Plus, it’s relatively inexpensive, easy to get around, and as it’s such a popular destination for backpackers, you’ll almost definitely get to meet a number of likeminded people along the way.
Australia
With unbeatable weather, plenty of wildlife, and no lack of land to explore, Australia is a great option for any traveller. And if you’re hoping to work while you travel, then Australia is definitely the destination for you.
Although it isn’t the cheapest of destinations, wages in Australia are pretty good and compared to other countries, obtaining a work visa isn’t too difficult. However, it’s important to note that getting around can be tricky without a car, so it’s usually best to look at car hire options. If you’re under 25, don’t worry, there are car rentals for 22 year olds available!
China
For something a little different, why not try China? If you’ve never been backpacking before, this may not be the best option, but if you’re a seasoned traveller, China offers a truly immersive and cultural experience.
Because the country is so diverse, backpacking allows you to get a more comprehensive view of the country as a whole. Although we do recommend researching the culture before you visit since it’s so different from western culture.
Thailand
No backpacking list would be complete without Thailand. Not only is it a beautiful country with exceptional food, it’s also incredibly affordable, making it ideal if you’re on a budget.
From stunning beaches to rocky mountains and a plethora of unique experiences, Thailand has got everything a traveller could want. To top it off, most residents speak English, so getting around is incredibly easy.
Indonesia
Indonesia is the world’s largest archipelago, so there really is no better choice for Island hopping. Of course, Bali is everyone’s go to (and by all means spend some time here!), but there are so many other Indonesian islands with just as much to offer.
No matter if you want to explore ancient temples, climb volcanoes, or enjoy a safari or two, you won’t be short of things to do while backpacking in Indonesia.
Where Will You Backpack in the New Year?
From Australia to Indonesia, there are so many great destinations for backpacking in 2026. Whether you’ve never backpacked before and would prefer a more beginner-friendly option like Thailand, or you’re feeling a little more adventurous and fancy somewhere like China, the world really is your oyster. So, get planning, get packing, and enjoy your trip!
