Hiking Trails Around Chikmagalur

The landscape of Karnataka is a vibrant canvas of mountain ranges, majestic waterfalls and vast coffee plantations. Chikmagalur, in particular, is a delightful escape for travellers who seek the embrace of nature and the exciting prospect of exploration.

Hiking is an unmissable experience here, with trails that cut across sprawling plantations, meander through dense forests, and climb mist-laden peaks. In this blog, we will take a closer look at some of the most captivating trails that showcase the beauty and diversity of ‘The Land of Coffee’.

Kudremukh Trail

Kudremukh is one of the most exhilarating trails in Chikmagalur. The trail spans approximately 20 kilometres. Kudremukh gets its name from its unique horse-shaped peak. The name ‘Kudremukh,’ means ‘horse’s face’ in the Kannada language. The Kudremukh trail cuts through dense Shola forests, sprawling grasslands, and babbling streams. As you ascend to 6,207 feet, expect to spot wildlife such as lion-tailed macaques, Malabar giant squirrels, and spotted deer. The views from the summit are mesmerising and make the climb worth the effort.

Mullayanagiri Trail

Located at an altitude of about 6,300 feet, Mullayanagiri is the highest peak in Karnataka and is a relatively easy hike. The trail begins at Sarpadhari and extends about 3.5 kilometres. Mullayanagiri is named after Saint Mulappa, who is believed to have meditated in the caves near the summit. Once at the top, you’ll be greeted with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The best months for this hike are between September and April, ensuring clear skies and cooler temperatures.

Bavikonda Kalchukki Trail

For those longing to escape the crowds, Bavikonda Kalchukki assures an offbeat hiking experience. This hidden gem winds through lush coffee and betel nut plantations before rising to a height of approximately 4,600 feet. Located at the foothills of Mullodi village, the trail takes you deep into nature, showcasing stunning vistas of towering hills, waterfalls, and untouched greenery. Despite being relatively unknown, this trail promises a peaceful and rejuvenating experience.

Kemmangundi Trail

Kemmangundi, also known as KR Hills, is a hill station near Chikmagalur. Perfect for a pleasant and calm hiking experience, the Kemmangundi trail is part of the pristine Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary. It offers mesmerising views and beautifully laid out ornamental gardens. The hill got its name from the King of Mysore, Krishnaraja Wadiyar, who used to vacation here in the summer. Kemmangundi is a 50-kilometre drive from Chikmagalur. The best time to visit is from September to April when the landscape is lush and the air crisp.

Devaramane Trail

Set in the quiet hamlet of Mudigere, Devaramane is a paradise for those seeking solitude in nature. The name Devaramane translates to ‘Abode of God,’ and the serene atmosphere here does justice to the title. Surrounded by mountains and misty valleys, the hike offers an otherworldly experience. If you’re fortunate, you might witness the rare Haarlu flower in bloom, which occurs only once every 12 years. Devaramane remains largely undiscovered by mainstream tourism and guarantees a quiet escape into the wild.

Kurinjal Trail

Situated within Kudremukh National Park, the Kurinjal trail offers an accessible hiking experience. The seven-kilometre trail is perfect for beginners and it takes only about four to five hours to reach the peak. Once at the summit, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of dense forests on one side and a sheer drop on the other. The best months to undertake this hike are between September and April, when the scenery is at its most vibrant.

Jenukal Gudda Trail

Also known as ‘Honey Stone Mountain,’ Jenukal Gudda is a captivating trail surrounded by lush forests and sprawling coffee and tea plantations. The trail begins at the 600-year-old Betta Byraveshwara Temple, which is believed to have ties to the Pandavas. The eight-kilometre hike takes around four hours, with the summit offering a spectacular sunset view over the Western Ghats. The best time to hike here is from October to March, ensuring clear visibility and pleasant weather.

Baba Budangiri Trail

Baba Budangiri is one of the most culturally significant hiking routes in Chikmagalur. Named after the 17th-century Sufi saint Baba Budan, who introduced coffee cultivation to India, this trail combines natural beauty with heritage. The Baba Budangiri trail is rich in history and spirituality. The walk leads you to the shrine of Baba Budan and offers breathtaking views of the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary. The route features a mix of steep climbs and gentle slopes and is a favourite among hiking enthusiasts in Chikmagalur.
