Travel Advice: What to do After a Car Accident in Las Vegas, NV

  • June 9, 2024
  • Robert

According to statistics, there were approximately 51,664 total crashes reported statewide in Nevada recently. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department reported a large percentage of these accidents – around 43.3% – which equates to about 22,215 crashes within Las Vegas city limits. That’s a daily average of nearly 61 accidents per day just in the Las Vegas area.

Additionally, a 2021 report showed 970 traffic fatalities occurred over a four-year period in Clark County, where Las Vegas is located. This averages out to around 194 deaths annually due to auto collisions in the county. And in July 2023 alone there were 32 fatalities, consistent with data from July 2022.

While no one expects to get in a crash while on vacation, it’s wise to be prepared in case the unfortunate occurs. Follow these tips if you find yourself in an auto accident while visiting Las Vegas:

Remain at the scene

Leaving can lead to criminal hit-and-run charges. Move out of traffic lanes if possible. Turn on hazard lights and set up road flares or reflectors if you have them.

Check for injuries

Seek medical attention right away if you or anyone else may be hurt. Don’t delay even for seemingly minor pain or discomfort after an accident.

Call the police

Even for minor collisions, you’ll want to file an official report. In Las Vegas, call 911 or contact the Metropolitan Police Department at 702-828-3111.

Exchange insurance information

Share your name, contact details, driver’s license, license plate, and insurance information with the other driver(s). Get their information in return. Document the makes, models, and plate numbers of all vehicles involved.

Take photos and videos

Use your smartphone to take pictures of the accident scene, damage to all vehicles, injuries if any, and the road conditions. Videos can also help capture unique details a single photo may miss.

Get witness info

If anyone saw the crash happen, ask for their names and contact details to share with the police and insurance companies later. Witnesses can provide impartial accident accounts.

Do NOT admit fault

Be cooperative with police, but don’t say or do anything to imply you were at fault, even if you think you were. Let officers determine blame through investigation.

Contact your insurance immediately

Alert them to the accident and start a claim. Provide all details and follow their instructions. If need be, they’ll help you arrange towing or a rental car.

Seek legal help if needed

According to Alex De Castroverde, a Las Vegas auto accident attorney, for severe crashes, complex circumstances, or injuries, is a good idea to consult a lawyer for guidance on protecting your rights. Don’t settle with insurers too fast without exploring your legal options first.

Review the police report

Once available, examine the official Las Vegas accident report carefully. If anything seems inaccurate or incomplete, contact the police to request corrections.

Follow up on claims

Stay engaged with both your and the other party’s insurance adjusters as they investigate fault and assess damages. Provide any additional needed documents. Don’t agree to a settlement offer without being sure the amount fully covers your damages and injuries.

Being in an auto accident can be a stressful and confusing ordeal, especially while traveling. By knowing these steps for handling a crash properly after it occurs, you can minimize frustration and make sure any damages, injuries, and expenses are covered.
