Cancun in Mexico is a must-visit destination for beach bums like us. From its gorgeous blue seas, fine white sand beaches, and festive nightlife, it’s no wonder this dream destination attracts the majority of the 1 million tourists flocking to Mexico every month (Source: Trading Economics).
Planning your next trip to Cancun? Here are 6 things you have to know when arriving in Cancun.
- No required COVID testing and vaccination proof
The good thing about Mexico is that it has fewer entry requirements than other countries. You can even travel with your pets!
When arriving at Cancun, you don’t have to test for COVID-19, quarantine, or even show proof of vaccination. Even the regular customs forms (FMM) are no longer required for tourists (except those coming from Haiti, Honduras, El Salvador, Venezuela, and Brazil)!
- Pay your Visitax ahead of time
A new tourism tax for Quintana Roo, including Cancun, requires you to pay via Visitax. Although you can pay at the airport, we recommend you complete this requirement before arrival.
You can avoid long waiting lines and have your Visitax processed in three easy steps and in a matter of minutes!
- Know your Terminal
Knowing what terminal your airplane will arrive at is important. Not only will it be easier to know the airport, but it will also help you plan early where your transportation can pick you up.
Cancun Airport has 4 terminals, but you will most likely be arriving from terminals 2, 3, or 4. If you want to know where your airline will mostly stop, check out the Cancun Airport website.
- Going Through Immigration is a game of luck

Over one million tourists visited in September (Source: Tourist Market Intelligence System of the Quintana Roo Tourist Promotion Council, 2022), and you better expect this number is only growing!
Depending on how many airplanes are arriving at the Cancun airport and the staff manning the line, you can pass through Immigration in as short as 10 minutes or as long as three hours!
You might also be randomly inspected in by officers in Immigration. Having to open your bags and have strangers poke around your things is frustrating!
To make sure you won’t get stuck any longer in Immigration, Check out Cancun’s customs information to find out what you cannot bring to Cancun airport.
- Book your transportation before your arrival
After a long flight and (possibly) long lineup in the Immigration, the last thing you want to do is haggle with a cab driver who most likely will try to quote you an expensive rate. You will not get a cheap rate by doing this. Even if you do, the stress is not worth the dimes you “save.”
Just book your transportation early. Nothing beats getting in your pre-booked car and on your way to the hotel without any more people getting your attention to sell you something
- Beware of Scams
There are many traps you can fall into when at the airport. Before you can exit yourself to safety, take caution with these few things when going around the airport:
- Don’t exchange your dollars at the airport. They have expensive exchange rates.
- Do not entertain anyone trying to sell you stuff like a timeshare apartment or timeshare presentations. Value your time and move on.
Cancun is an experience of a lifetime. But, getting there can be quite tedious. We created this list so you can travel to Cancun worry and hassle-free.
