Top 3 diving locations for scuba diving on the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

  • January 12, 2022
  • Jules

Visiting Mexico is always an adventure, especially if you’re passionate about waters and diving. There are so many different places to explore, blue waters to dive into, and astonishing scenery to capture. No wonder that the destination is on the top of the list of many travelers and adventure seekers.

However, one of the biggest challenges is to decide where your next scuba diving destination in Mexico should be. There are a lot of different options to choose from and making the right decision might be a struggle.

To help you become familiar with some of the most popular diving destinations in Mexico, we’ve created a list of 3 of the best locations for scuba diving. Let’s see what each one has to offer.

Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen is located just 55 km from Cancun International Airport, on the eastern coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. Scuba diving in Playa del Carmen is extremely popular as the area is considered one of the best spots for diving in the world. The average temperature is 25 degrees and you can expect good weather throughout the whole year. Water experiences are possible during every season, with the lowest water temperatures being 78.8 ºF or 26 ºC, which is still pretty good for divers. Mesmerizing coral reefs can be seen offshore from the island of Cozumel, a beautiful spot that you can reach via boat.

The good news is that the location is also ideal for thrill and adrenaline seekers as you can dive with sharks in Playa del Carmen. Although very exciting and adventurous, the shark diving experience is completely safe.

Tulum

Another beautiful spot to visit in Mexico for its diving opportunities is Tulum – a beautiful location situated very close to Playa del Carmen. There are a lot of different Scuba diving adventures in Tulum that you can try, including diving in cenotes, snorkeling, diving in caves, and Caribbean sea diving.

The cenotes that you can observe in Tulum are truly astonishing. You can see fascinating stalactite and stalagmite formations and explore some of the best places around the Yucatan Peninsula. Enjoy sand beaches, reefs, and a lot of beautiful sights. Tulum is a great choice for diving for both beginners and advanced divers. It’s a perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. You can hop on crocodile night tours and take part in a ton of exciting activities.

Akumal

If you’re ever searched for places to try various underwater adventures in Mexico, you’ve probably heard of Akumal in the Yucatan. Cave diving is an amazing experience that can hardly be described with words. Once you try it, you won’t be able to forget it for the rest of your life. On most occasions, you’ll need to be a certified diver in order to participate in cave diving. Before you visit Akumal, if you’re looking to dive in caves, in particular, check what the requirements are and if you’re eligible to participate.

Just like the two previously described locations, Akumal is another stunning location with a number of gorgeous beaches, underwater cenotes, caves, and more. Explore underwater limestone caves that will take you back through history, hop on different diving trips, and observe the underwater world and meet lobsters, sea turtles, barracudas, and more.

Mexico is truly a dream come true for anyone who is passionate about the underwater world and wants to experience thrilling adventures. To make your trip to Mexico pleasant and unforgettable, make sure that you’ve planned in advance and that you’ve checked what type of experience, equipment, and preparation you’ll need to take part in different water activities.
