We’ve compiled a list of things to do in Oxford to ensure you don’t miss out on the highlights.

  • Spend an afternoon at Ashmolean Museum

The Ashmolean Museum, first opened to the public in 1683, is the world’s most popular museum of art and archaeology and is part of the University of Oxford.

Explore the vast array of exhibits, which include artefacts ranging from 8000 BC to the current day.

From Ancient Egyptian tombs to modern art, there is plenty for everybody.

So take a look around this palace after venturing out of your student housing in Oxford.

  • Get lost in the Botanic Gardens

Oxford’s Botanic Garden, located near Magdalen College, is a haven of beauty in the heart of the city and is one of the oldest known botanical gardens.

Inside, you may get lost in the diversity of sights and fragrances, or simply relax on a peaceful seat and enjoy the weather and the vegetation around you.

  • Behold the Gates of Narnia

If you look closely enough, you can locate the gateway to Narnia near the University Church of St Mary the Virgin.

The ‘Narnia Door’ is robust and eye-catching, with a flaming lion stretching out to you from the centre of its hardwood core.

As a tutor at Magdalen College, CS Lewis would have passed past this door on a daily basis.

This specific structure is undoubtedly where he got the idea for his youthful protagonists to pass through the wardrobe door into a mythical realm.

On this little Oxford street, the iconic street light is also only a few metres away!

  • Take part in Tortoise war

Every campus owns a tortoise, and every summer in May, the colleges gather to compete in a tortoise race.

Because they are so near to one another, Trinity College, founded in 1555, is one of Balliol College’s fiercest competitors.

An 8-metre-wide circle of lettuce is laid out on the field, and onlookers wait for the tortoises to emerge from the centre and approach the lettuce line to win.

  • A stroll through the Covered Market

A visit to Oxford would not be complete without a stroll through the Covered Market.

During the Christmas season, the walls are decorated with hanging turkeys.

It’s a fascinating sight, but it isn’t for vegans or turkey fans.

The Covered Market, housed in a structure dating back to the 1770s, offers a richness of intriguing history and is home to a variety of small stores providing meals, souvenirs, footwear, clothes, coffee, pastries, art, and much more!
