Deemed to become one of the most affluent cities in the Gulf, the capital of Qatar holds tremendous promises taking into consideration the rapid development one witnesses here. In addition to this, Doha is also home to museums containing some of the most exquisite relics, impressive structures, a rich culture and a variety of entertainment sources that make it an interesting destination for family holiday makers. Moreover, you can find many shopping places in Qatar where you can get a feeling of the traditional costumes and antiques.

For families looking for a cultural fix on their trip to Doha, consider the following –

Shop

Souq Waqif – This renovated Arabic market quarter is a maze that you can get lost in for hours together. The shops here are organised on the basis of what they sell allowing you to explore the nuances of local spices, souvenirs, foods and more. Even if you are travelling with teenagers, take some time off to smoke some sheesha.

Gold Souq – Located right by the HSBC bus station, this is a great market to buy your wife some exquisite gold and jewellery.

Explore

Museum of Islamic Art – This is a rather iconic feature of the city’s skyline. A highly education trip for those with children, this building houses a comprehensive collection of Islamic art that spans 3 continents and 1400 years.

The National Museum of Qatar – Due to open in December 2014, this museum located at the end of Al Muthaf Street promises exciting insights for families into the local heritage and culture of Qatar.

Eat

Machboos- Also known as Kabsa, this is a popular rice dish you must try while in Doha. Consisting of a family of mixed rice, this dish uses a mixture of exotic spices and meat to add to its flavour.

Harees-  Give your family a taste of the local cuisine with a dish of boiled, cracked and coarsely ground wheat prepared along with a choice of meat of chicken. Harees is a popular dish often served during the month of Ramadan.

For families who are looking for pure entertainment during their trip to Doha, consider the following –

City Centre- Doha, the largest shopping centre in the country. Filled with shops selling jewellery and perfume and home to a bowling alley, multiplex and children’s arcade, this mall is ideal for families. Also, visit the Venice inspired Villagio Mall near the Aspire Centre.

Explore the highlight of the city – Al-Corniche a beautiful seaside promenade that comes with excellent views of the Palm Tree Island and the city skyline.

With a variety of cuisines such as Thai, Korean, Indian, American and local Middle Easter easily available in the city, families can make the most of their culinary preferences in Doha.

With a variety of places to explore, it is ideal to rent a car from Hertz and optimise your itinerary in Doha.
