Five Myths About Studying Abroad

  • April 23, 2014
  • Jules

Studying abroad is a great opportunity for students to increase their knowledge while being immersed in a completely different environment. However, misconceptions and false statements often lead students to believe that overseas education is not for them. If you have a passion to study abroad in Israel, France, Korea, or any other country in the world, then you have to know about these myths and the facts behind them. Read on!

There are not enough scholarships available

Many students believe that there are not that many scholarships available for international students looking for education abroad. The fact is, if you know where to look, and if you look hard enough, there may be one or two scholarships out of the thousands that you can apply for. There are scholarships for financial assistance, specialty scholarships, and exemplary performance scholarships. These scholarships are offered not only by universities, but also by private organizations.

Studying abroad delays graduation

Studying abroad does not always delay graduation. If you are worried about not graduating on time, all it takes is a bit of research so you can get the credit transfer you need if you plan to take some of your subjects abroad. Some students who have studied abroad have even graduated earlier than scheduled as accelerated classes are available, too. Before enrolling, take the time to research and ask questions if the subjects that you plan to take can be credited to your elective, minor, and major subjects.

Students who do not know a foreign language cannot study abroad

Knowing a foreign language is not a prerequisite for studying overseas. If you are worried about the language barrier, you can always choose to study in English-speaking countries, such as Australia or England. Plenty of other universities from around the world also offer courses that are taught in English, so not knowing a foreign language should not be a barrier to your education.

Studying abroad is not for everyone

The truth is, no matter where you are from, what your interests are, and what your major is, studying abroad is for you, if you want it. Universities around the world offer a variety of programs and courses for every students’ need, and there is no reason why you should not find something that will benefit you. You will gain positive experiences academically, professionally, and personally.

Studying abroad is a luxury

Plenty of students think that studying abroad is a big party, but it can be quite the opposite. While the academic environment will be different from where you are studying now, that does not necessarily mean that you can relax, go sightseeing, and attend every party in campus. For some, studying abroad may even be more challenging. Besides, studying is different from travelling, and if studying is really what you are after, then it is studying that you must focus on.

Now that you have an idea of what really happens if you choose to study abroad, it is time for you to decide if it is truly what you are looking for. Overseas education can give you experiences, educational or otherwise, that are sure to be priceless.
