Idris Elba’s latest project is a high-octane international driving tour: King of Speed, which will air on BBC2 on 26 December 2013 at 8.15pm.
The Luther and The Wire star will front the new two part documentary on the BBC, which explores the origins and untold history of international motor racing. The driving tour will see
Elba visit various racetracks across the USA, UK and Finland, uncovering the evolution of motor racing from a social, political and historical perspective. King of Speed will contain an insight into long-established races such as NASCAR as well as various driving styles utilised in movies.
The TV series is a Shine North/Shine TV production and production is thought to be underway, but no airdate has been set as yet. We will of course update this post as soon as we have a firm date!
Idris Elba seems to be everywhere right now; on TV as John Luther in the acclaimed BBC series ‘Luther’ Season 3. He’ll also be familiar to fans of classic US TV Series ‘The Wire’ (I’m currently working my way through the entire boxset series) as the character Russell ‘Stringer’ Bell in the HBO series. He’s also playing the lead in the movie Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, which is released on 29 November 2013 in the USA (limited release) and 3 January 2014 in the UK. He has also appeared in other movies such as Legacy, Thor and Prometheus.
Proving his versatility, Elba also works as a DJ, recording artist and director. He’s directed and starred in the Mumford & Sons video Lover of the Light – watch the YouTube video below;
