Today is World Tourism Day 2012 and official celebrations are taking place in Maspalomas in the Spanish Canary Islands. This year’s WTD held on 27 September 2012 will focus on ‘Tourism & Sustainable Energy: Powering Sustainable Development.’
The official celebrations will be attended by the Prince and Princess of Asturias, Ban Ki-moon, the UN Secretary-General and hundreds of government and tourism representatives.
Hundreds more local events will take place across the world such as special interest walks, talks on how to be a responsible traveller and travel offers. Events include a mushroom hunting walk in Tohera in Estonia, a hands-on volunteer restoration project in Old Sacramento in California, USA and the ceremonious opening of the KunYu mountain RV camp in Yantai in China.
Travellers can get involved and aim to become an eco-travel saint by hosting their own local event which can be added to the interactive map on the official WTD website.
The event will also highlight the ongoing impact of global warming and climate change on our environment which we have highlighted in our recent post Hurry: 10 Destinations To Visit Before They Disappear Forever.
