7. The Serengeti Wildebeest Migration – Tanzania, Eastern Africa
Prepare yourself for one of world’s most stunning wildlife events with The Great Serengeti Wildebeest Migration, which is also known as ‘The Greatest Show on Earth’. This amazing spectacle is the longest and largest movement of herds in the world with approximately 1.4 million wildebeest migrating. The wildebeest head for the hills of Kenya’s Masai Mara and as well as wildebeest there are also zebra and gazelle making the dangerous journey clockwise covering over 1,800 miles each year in search of the rain ripened grass. The semi-annual occurrence is also classed as one of the ten natural travel wonders on the planet. The Serengeti ecosystem is located in north-western Tanzania and spans 30,000 km2. The area has several national parks and game reserves and the word Serengeti comes from the Maasai language meaning “Endless Plains”. It is estimated that 70 larger mammal species are found here including blue wildebeests, gazelles, zebras and buffaloes.

The Ganges is thought to be a goddess by Hindus and thousands of locals make the pilgrimage every morning into the water to pray and to wash away their sins. It is believed that in order for you to reach heaven your body must touch the Ganges. As part of a long-standing tradition, Hindus are brought to the Ganges to be buried. The banks are lined with temples of which those around Haridwar, Allahabad and Varanasi are said to be particularly auspicious areas in which to bathe.
