Derry: A Guide

  • March 14, 2013

The stunning countryside and heavenly coast of Derry has become a real pull for tourists in the last few years. The Travelodge Derry provides a place to rest your weary head after discovering all this historic and serene city has to offer so why not start planning your trip now?

With the Travelodge website offering competitive room prices and flights costing as little as £50 return easy to find, there really is no excuse for not visiting Derry.

And if you need any more convincing, here’s our handy guide to one of Ireland’s most beautiful cities.

For culture vultures and those who are young at heart, Derry has plenty of festivals and events all year round. Using the city as a base, you can explore the Causeway coast, the Sperrin Mountains or the dunes of Magilligan strand at your leisure.

There’s plenty for foodies to get their teeth stuck into too, with a number of fantastic restaurants where you can enjoy a nice meal, whatever your budget. You can sample freshly caught seafood (look out for the oysters), local meats and cuisine from around the world all in this peaceful Irish city – food lovers need not worry about a trip to Derry.

Derry really comes alive at night, and if you miss festival season, then there’s still plenty to do. Enjoy a pint of Guinness in one of the city’s welcoming pubs or sip cocktails in a number of cosmopolitan bars. Live music begins around 10pm so whether you’re into traditional Irish music or something a little more contemporary, there will be a pub or club to suit your tastes.

You’ll also never be stuck for something to do during the day, with a walk of the City Walls something you must partake in. The Tower Museum provides all the history you need of this great city while a guided tour is also recommended. Finally, one of Northern Ireland’s most spectacular sights, the Giant’s Causeway, is just over an hour’s drive away so make sure you visit this fascinating freak of nature in the flesh before you leave.
