Health and beauty maintenance to consider during travel

  • June 12, 2023

Have you got a summer holiday coming up? Whether you are going for a long weekend in Lisbon or backpacking around Asia for a month, there are various health and beauty maintenance measures you should consider implementing during your trip.

While a holiday is a perfect opportunity to mix up your routine and get a break from everyday life, you will inevitably have a better time if you are feeling your best physically. Consider the following habits and preparation for your next trip.

Hair

If you are travelling to somewhere with a humid climate, your hair may well suffer as a result. From split ends to frizz, your hair will likely require a little extra TLC for you to look and feel your best. Getting a trim just before you travel is an effective way to make sure your hair is in good condition. It is also handy to pack a nourishing hair mask to use throughout your trip, giving your hair the additional moister it might be craving.

If you choose to remove any of your body hair, you may want to go for a different method than usual ahead of your holiday. Opting for waxing over shaving means that the hair will grow back at a slower rate, leaving less to worry about during your time away. Additionally, considering the longevity of results, waxing may be a more convenient choice for vacation preparations. It provides longer-lasting hair removal compared to shaving, minimizing the need for frequent touch-ups while you’re away. This can be particularly beneficial if you’re prone to experiencing itchy legs after shaving, as waxing typically results in smoother skin and reduces the risk of post-hair removal discomfort.

Vitamins and pain relief

Holidays are all about indulgence and treating yourself. However, while doing this, it can be beneficial to take a multivitamin to ensure your body is getting some of the nutrients it requires. This will also allow you to have better energy levels and subsequently enjoy your trip more. It is important to speak with your doctor before you start taking anything new.

While you hopefully will not need it, it is always wise to pack some pain relief in your hand luggage, should you require it at any point during your stay. With potential language barriers, it is handy to have pain relief that you know and trust to hand in case of emergency.

Sun protection

For many of us, a holiday is largely about spending some much-needed time in the sun. Whether you are a professional sunbather or more of a shade-seeker, it is vital that you pack and use adequate sun protection throughout your stay. Look out for suncream that protects against both UV-A and UV-B and be vigilant with reapplication during the day. Remember, the sun can cause damage even on cloudier days, so wear SPF regardless.

If you are keen to return home with an impressive tan, you could consider using a tan accelerator alongside your suncream.

Hydration

Heat stroke can be very dangerous and can quickly ruin a holiday. One way to help avoid this is to ensure you are always well-hydrated. Packing an insulated water bottle means you can always have water to hand, helping you to avoid heat exhaustion. Before drinking the tap water at your destination, do some research as to whether it is safe to consume. It may be that you need to stick to bottled or filtered water during your trip.
