What To Pack for an Alaska All-Inclusive Vacation

  • December 6, 2022
  • Jules

Alaska offers guests sights and experiences unlike anywhere else in the United States. Vacations to Alaska are most common in the summer months when the weather is warmest, the fishing is best and you have the greatest chance of viewing wildlife like bears and humpback whales. Winter is less popular, as the weather hovers around 20°F and there’s often less than six hours of daylight each day, but the northern lights are in peak form and still draw tourists.

If you’re planning an Alaska all-inclusive vacation, you want to make sure you pack everything you’re going to need. Your needs will depend on the time of year you’re visiting and what activities you’re planning. Here’s a complete breakdown packing list for your Alaskan adventure.

Alaska All-Inclusive Basics

No matter when you’re visiting Alaska or what your trip entails, there are a few things you need to bring.

Layering Clothes

Bringing layering clothes allows you to dress for whatever weather you might experience. This is true even in the summer, as temperatures rarely exceed 70°F. There are three key layers to pack:

  • Inner layer. Your innermost clothing layer should be a long underwear type of clothing. If you’re planning to be active, this layer must be moisture-wicking. On warmer days, you can wear this layer without anything over it.
  • Insulating layer. This layer provides extra warmth. Look for something warm and lightweight, like a fleece jacket or a sweater.
  • Outer layer. Your outer layer is the one that can vary the most depending on the time of year you travel. In the warmer months, you need something waterproof and breathable. In colder months, you want something heavier but still waterproof to protect from the snow.

Cool Weather Accessories

Cool and cold weather accessories include things like:

  • Gloves or mittens
  • Hats
  • Scarves

In the winter, these should be heavier and warmer. Lighter gear can be worn the rest of the year. Bring these accessories even in the summer, in case the weather is unusually chilly or windy, or you visit a glacier or two.

The Right Footwear

For most people, a trip to Alaska involves a lot of time on your feet. Choose sturdy, comfortable shoes that you know you’ll be able to spend hours in. You’ll also want warm, weatherproof boots if your vacation is in the winter.

Summer Packing

Tourism to Alaska peaks between June and August. If you’re visiting during the warmer months, be sure to pack:

  • Summer clothes. Short-sleeved shirts and shorts will help you keep cool if the weather gets warmer than usual.
  • Sun protection. While the angle of the sun is lower in Alaska, the days are longer in the summer, meaning you could get more sun exposure. Pack essentials like sunscreen and sunglasses to keep you safe from UV rays.
  • Bug spray. Mosquitos are worst during summer, so bring bug repellent with Deet to prevent bites and infections.
  • Sleep mask. Some parts of Alaska receive 16-24 hours of daylight in the summer. If you’re particularly sensitive to light, a sleeping mask can help your body go to bed on time.
  • Swimsuit. You’ll need a swimsuit if you’re brave enough to take a dip in one of Alaska’s many lakes. You’ll also want to bring a suit if your hotel or resort has a pool or hot tub.

Packing for Adventure

Your plans can greatly influence your packing list. You want to be sure to bring the right stuff for everything on your agenda.

Fishing

If you plan on fishing in Alaska, you’re going to need a fishing license. You can easily purchase this online, but many local places will have them as well.

Many places also offer equipment for rent, but bring along gear you can’t live without. Make sure you have clothes to dress appropriately, especially waterproof items.

Hiking

Alaska offers many different hiking options, but no matter what you choose, you’re going to need sturdy, comfortable, and lightweight shoes or boots. Dress with layers to be comfortable and warm. If you’re going to be in the rainforest, you’ll need coated waterproof rain gear to protect against downpours.

Other gear to bring along on a hike includes:

  • Backpack or tote bag
  • Binoculars
  • Camera, if you think your phone’s camera might not cut it
  • Refillable water bottles and snacks
  • Travel first aid kit

Get Ready for an Amazing Alaska All-Inclusive

Packing the right gear is one of the best ways to make your Alaska all-inclusive vacation a trip to remember. Before leaving, check the upcoming weather so you can bring the right gear to keep you warm, dry, and healthy. Planning ahead and packing accordingly will give you the vacation of a lifetime!
