Food Worth Travelling For: Contemporary Australian Cuisine

  • February 21, 2022
  • Jules

Australia is not all about kangaroo meat or barbecues; they have other great food you need to try out. Australian cuisine is heavily influenced by its multicultural heritage. Aussies have elevated the typical dining experience by reinventing known dishes from all over the world. Get your passports, book that flight, and feast on Australia’s gastronomic delight. This guide should help you with your food-related activity when you visit the country.

  1. Visit Restaurants

Looking for a fancy place to have a date, a family get-together, or a five-course meal? Visit the restaurants Bourke Street Melbourne. Here you’ll find a modern twist to traditional Australian food. They use the best and fresh ingredients and serve meals from breakfast to dinner. Moreover, you can book your reservations online.

  1. Eat Like The Locals

This is a budget-friendly alternative to dine and eat like the locals. You’ll find a variety of cuisines in each town. You’re not only going to have a feast but also get the chance to talk to the locals. Ask them what dishes they’re most proud of, so you’ll have a list of food to try. Some widely known Australian food selections are as follows:

  • Barbecued Snags – This is grilled sausage. The meat used is either pork or beef, but there are other kinds of meat if you’re feeling a little adventurous.
  • Chicken Parmigiana – This is a classic chicken dish inspired by the Italian-American cooking style. It’s made of thinly sliced chicken with tomato sauce and melted cheese toppings.
  • Barramundi – This is a healthy option for battered fish. This can be cooked either fried, grilled, or seared with skin side first.
  1. Catch And Eat Seafood

If you’re into seafood, you’ll enjoy your visit to Australia. They have over 4,000 fish species and 200 or more kinds of seafood. You can indulge in the fresh catch of the day. Yet if you want to go on a bit of adventure, you can catch your own seafood. You can either go fishing or hunting for mud crabs, harvest oysters, or go free diving to get sea urchins.

  • Elephant Shark – This is good for fish and chips. Its meat is of excellent quality, low in fat, white, and firm.
  • Yabby – This is a crayfish that you can either put in soup or pan-fry, grill, or steam. It can also be an alternative to crabs, lobsters, and shrimp.
  • Oyster – This is available all year-round. You can eat it raw or with a sprinkle of lemon and a pinch of pepper.
  1. Drink Until You Drop

You can have your preferred drink while munching on some food. Schedule a whole day to go on a wine-tasting tour. Australia has over 2,460 wineries, and you don’t want to miss it. You can also visit cafes and coffee shops and try their hot cocoa or a cup of their espresso. Moreover, enjoy the nightlife scene by going to the pubs and tasting their gin and handcrafted beer.

  • Long Black – This is similar to the Americano. However, the preparation is quite different as the extracted espresso is poured into a cup of hot water.
  • Gin And Tonic – If you’re into hard liquor, give Australian gin and tonic a try.
  • Beer – Take a night off touring and go to their pubs and get yourself a handcrafted beer.
  1. Try Some Of Their Snacks

Take a break from full-course meals and try some of their snacks while sipping tea or hot cocoa. These can be eaten at any time of the day. If your kids are traveling with you, they might enjoy the following classic Australian snacks. You can find these in grocery stores, food trucks, and even local bakeries.

  • Fairy Bread – This is buttered white bread with sprinkles as toppings. You’d be surprised to know that you can easily make your own fairy bread at home.
  • Lamington – This is a sponge cake dipped in chocolate and is covered in desiccated coconut. Some Australians like to put jam or cream in the middle. This can be paired with afternoon tea.
  • Meat Pies – These are hand-sized pies filled with mincemeat, gravy, and tomato sauce.

Conclusion

Food is one of the reasons why most people travel. They want to try what each country has to offer. You’re in luck as Australia offers a wide variety of dishes. Think about where you want to go and try out some of their famous food. You can either visit their restaurants or ask the locals for food recommendations. You can also go fishing or catch your own seafood. Furthermore, have a taste of their snacks and try out their drinks.
