COVID & Travel: What You Need to Know

  • January 31, 2022
  • Jules

We have now nearly been living with COVID-19 for two years and this has had a continuous impact on just about every aspect of life. One area that has been under constant strain with rules constantly changing is travel. Unfortunately, this has not changed recently and is likely to continue for some time to come, especially when you consider that different countries are at different stages of the Omicron wave.

So, what are the latest updates to be aware of?

Situation Improving in the UK

In the UK, there are reasons to be cautiously optimistic with pre-travel COVID tests no longer required for UK entry if fully vaccinated and all Plan B measures to end on the 26th of January.

Not So Positive in Europe Yet

Denmark, Austria and Germany are countries that are seeing a sharp spike in infections right now with many planning a 4th vaccine dose for vulnerable people. Elsewhere, Greece has extended restrictions for a week for bars and restaurants due to the Omicron wave while Tenerife has risen its alert level to Very High Risk. It is clear that many popular holiday areas are currently in the grip of the Omicron wave and this can make travel difficult to plan.

Current Restrictions

It is also important to be aware of the different restrictions and isolation periods for places around Europe. France had banned travel from the UK except for essential reasons, but now vaccinated visitors will need a negative COVID test. COVID restrictions will ease in February in France after the vaccination pass comes into effect and this could improve travel prospects further. Switzerland, meanwhile, has recently halved quarantine time to 5 days and UK travellers now no longer require a pre-departure test.

Where Can I Travel?

“Where can I travel?” Is a question that many Brits will be asking right now. Obviously, it is a fast-changing situation, and you need to keep a lookout for the latest guidance. Currently, if you are double vaccinated then places that you can visit include Turkey, Croatia, Malta and Spain just as a few examples.

Travel Advice

With the situation changing so quickly, there are a few important tips to keep in mind. First, travel insurance is more important than ever and you need to make sure that you are covered against cancellations due to COVID-19. In addition to this, you need to check to see if a pre-departure test is needed for entry and always make sure that you have access to your COVID passport.

It is understandable that people are keen to get away on holiday this year. This should be possible, but you still need to be wary of COVID restrictions and pay close attention to the latest news and guidance so that you can plan accordingly and hopefully have an enjoyable trip.
