The Cultural, Mental, Monetary, and Physical Benefits of Traveling

  • September 29, 2021
  • Jules

Many people love traveling because they get to see the world and experience different things. This is an important part of human development, as traveling offers numerous benefits. Travel allows for social interaction with people who are both different and similar to you.

Cultural, Educational, and Social Benefits

It’s quite obvious that traveling to another country will help open your mind and broaden your horizons. Without travel, we’re stuck in our own views of the world, only receiving outside information from the media. The media isn’t always accurate when it comes to portraying a different way of life, so the best way to learn about it is to experience it for yourself, by interacting with other people and living it.

While there are many ways to learn about another culture from your own home, nothing compares to actually living it yourself. Culture encompasses so many things: language, cuisine, music, fashion— and you can only learn so much from a textbook or documentary. Experiencing a new culture hands-on is more likely to stay with you than reading about it or watching it.

Mental Benefits

Preparing for travel may be stressful for some because you have to make sure you have everything you need for your trip, including neglected details such as medical insurance, proper car insurance, and travel insurance in general. However, this becomes less stressful over time, to the point where you’re just anxious about getting away. A change of scenery is always good for the mind, especially if your everyday life typically consists of a busy routine. Traveling (and vacation in general) helps to relax the mind. Taking a break from a mundane routine to wake up later, eat new foods, and just a simple change of scenery can boost your mood.

Traveling will also boost your creativity. If you are traveling to a place that is completely different from your home, literally everything will be new, forcing you to come up with new ways of understanding what’s around you. It takes you out of your comfort zone, so you’re almost forced to adapt to your new surroundings, which is a rewarding experience.

Monetary Benefits

You may be wondering how traveling can offer you monetary benefits. Sometimes, you can get paid to travel or travel for free. Your job may require you to travel, in which case all or most of your travel expenses will be paid for, or you can get paid as a travel blogger or vlogger (YouTuber). Another, more popular monetary benefit of traveling is the ability to gain frequent flyer miles. Airlines offer reward programs in which travelers who fly a certain number of miles in a specified time can earn points towards a free flight or some other benefit.

Physical/Health Benefits

Traveling has many health benefits. First of all, you’re probably more physically active while you’re traveling than you are at home. Depending on where you’re going, you can be walking to all of your destinations, or you’re probably engaging in a lot of physical recreation. You also have the opportunity to sleep more when you’re traveling, and sleep is essential to health. You’re sleeping more, so you’re more relaxed, which benefits both mental and physical health.

Another health benefit of traveling is that you’re more likely to be eating full meals as opposed to fast food. Some of the places you visit may even have healthier cuisine, such as the Mediterranean where the cuisine contains less added sugars and refined carbohydrates.

Conclusion

Of course, there are downsides to traveling, as everything has both pros and cons. Fortunately, most of these cons are due to a lack of experience in traveling. Like with anything else you do in life, the more you travel the better you’ll get at it and you’ll be able to fully enjoy all of the benefits that come with traveling.
