Canada Day is a great countrywide celebration held on July 1st each year. It is the anniversary of the day in 1867 when the British North America Act of Canada created the Canadian Federal government. Everybody in Canada joins in this day of celebration, much like America celebrates the freedom from the British on July 4, 1776. Canadian parties are everywhere in grand Canadian style, typically with fireworks, cookouts, BBQ’s and get-togethers. It’s a day totally devoted to enjoying the country that you live in, love and support.
Canada Day was originally called Dominion Day because it was the day that the British North America Act declared that Canada was “one Dominion under the name of Canada,” but following an act of Parliament on October 27, 1982, the name was thereby changed to Canada Day.
Tourist destinations are usually open on Canada Day and many stores operate on holiday hours, but banks, government offices and other stores and businesses will be closed on July 1st, so be sure to call ahead if you plan on doing any shopping. Canada celebrates and the whole country is invited to plan a party.
The citizens of Canada are proud of their country. Since the earliest days of their beautiful country, Canadians have felt that this land was their land of promise and that over the past 145 years they have built a strong and excellent country and around the world Canadians are known by their strong convictions in maintaining respect for human rights. Canada is a country known for keeping peace and living their lives quietly as an example. Their country borders America and reaches north into the Antarctica, and every year they anticipate the possibilities that are ahead for their people and their beautiful country.
