Travel Tips For Senior Explorers

  • January 20, 2021

Aging shouldn’t be a roadblock for those who love to travel and explore.  Though your physical needs may change as you get a bit older, a capable mind can make for a successful adventure.

There may be things you need that you didn’t need ten years ago, but the world is a very accommodating place.  Take a moment to check out a few travel tips for senior explorers, and start making plans for your next trip today.

Get travel insurance before you go

Before it becomes time to find the right retirement community, you can spend your time finding other hotspots along the way.  However, you shouldn’t travel without getting insurance first.

If you have a medical need or emergency while you’re out of town, it’s helpful to know that you don’t have to worry about the toll it will take on your wallet.  When you have travel insurance, you’re covered.

Pack all your necessities

Whenever you are packing for travel, it’s essential to bring all your necessities, including medications, medical devices, and emergency tools. This includes carrying your medical alert system, which can act as a lifesaving emergency call button in case of falls or sudden medical issues.

Additionally, consider packing items like a first aid kit, hearing aids, extra glasses, a walker or cane, or any other mobility aids you may need. Of course, you’ll also pack the usual essentials like clothes, toiletries, mobile chargers, and any other personal items required for a comfortable trip.

Plan to stick to your food/medicine regimen

Getting older often means that you have more medications to take every day, and you likely have a breakfast, lunch, and dinner regimen.  In the interest of preserving your health, it’s wise to stick to the schedule while you are traveling.

Throwing off your med schedule can cause some troublesome medical challenges, and the same applies to throwing off your dietary schedule.  In short, make sure you take your meds and eat right while you’re on your journey.

Keep it simple whenever possible

Planning is the key to successful travel when you get older.  You want to make sure that you stay in a hotel that can properly accommodate your needs, and you want to place yourself close to all the things you want to do while you’re visiting a spot.

For instance, if you’re headed for the beach.  Get a place with private beach access, so you don’t even have to load up the car to go enjoy the beauty of the ocean.

Do some research in advance

If you want to take a special tour of an area, you will benefit from making a few phone calls before you book your tour.   You may need guaranteed access for your wheelchair or something to that effect, and it’ll help you worry less to know that the situation has already been prepared for your experience.

Look into the elderly services offered for travelers in the area, and see what’s on the table for assistance.  You may not have to do much to prepare a vacation that’s perfect for you if you have the help of a specialized travel service.

Keep in touch with family

In conclusion, it’s important to keep in touch with your loved ones as you travel.  Your family knowing where you are is another assurance that you are supported.  Let someone know you’re safe on a daily basis while you’re away, and let accountability appease the minds of those who care.
