5 Tips to Prepare for Moving Abroad

  • July 8, 2020
  • admin

So you’ve finally decided to fulfil your lifelong dream of moving abroad?

The exciting realisation that it’s finally happening feels amazing, but reality sure hits when you remember just how much there is to do!

This list of five great tips to prepare for moving abroad isn’t exhaustive, but covers a few crucial things you might have missed, as well as one or two useful solutions to some obvious challenges – read on to prep perfectly for your trip of a lifetime.

1. Learn the local language

Of course, you’ll learn as you go once you arrive at your new destination, but there’s no harm in getting a head start.

Having a little local lingo under your belt as soon as you move will help with just about everything, from getting around day-to-day to finding a job.

If you need a little help getting started, Teachers To Your Home provide tutors for a range of language, teach at all levels from primary school to A Level, and even provide adult tuition.

2. Find a job

Applying for jobs overseas can be daunting, and depending on your circumstances, you might prefer to look once you’re settled in your home country.

But applying before you leave gives you plenty of time to consider what opportunities are out there for your level of skill and experience – bear in mind when applying that you’re up against extra competition that you’ll need to work even harder to beat.

3. Have a clear out

How big – or small – you go with this one is up to you.

But if you’re completely uprooting and taking everything with you, how much does ‘everything’ need to be?

Be as ruthless as you can with your clear out – there’s no place for old junk in your new adventure.

Even better if you can shift some of it on eBay – it never hurts to bring in a little extra cash, after all.

4. Move your pets

Understandably, many owners don’t want to leave their animal companions behind when they go abroad.

But there are a few practical things to consider when bringing them with you.

It’s a good idea to consult their vet to make sure they’re well enough for the journey, and bear in mind that each country has their own rules about transporting certain animals or breeds. This is especially true for exotic pets like lizards or snakes, as well as certain breeds of dog.

When it comes to making the right choices for your furry (or scaly) friend, pet relocation services like Passports for Pets can help make the transition as smooth as possible for you and them.

5. Switch your bank account

If you’re planning on keeping your existing bank account, your bank should be able to assist and may even be able to offer a few fee-free services. They may also be able to arrange an overseas account with you.

Alternatively, find out about local banks in your host country and clarify the process for switching your account.
