New Zealand is one of the world’s most sought after travel destinations and with good reason. A country set against spectacular natural backdrops, alive with cultural wonder and a rich tapestry of traditions, Aotearoa is a backpacker’s paradise. But deciding which iconic cities to tackle on your trip to New Zealand might take some careful consideration so we have put together a list of must-see cities.

  1. Auckland

With a population of over 1.5 million people, a gorgeous skyline and a vibrant atmosphere to match Auckland is not just another Big City. Alongside the picturesque skyline Auckland has beautiful beaches, rolling parks and even a fair few volcanoes, all this atrractions are visited by thousands of backpackers every year, most places also provide parking for self-contained campervans.

If you want to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the city then visit Piha’s beautiful black beach, try your hand at Stand-Up Paddle Boarding in Mission Bay or simply take a hike through the Waitakere Mountain Ranges.

For those of you who want to experience the vivacious nightlife then enjoy a cocktail on Auckland’s Viaduct, visit posh Ponsonby or just take it all in in New Market.

  1. Wellington

New Zealand’s capital city showcases the country’s history with pride at the Te Papa Museum. Take in the views at the Bee-Hive – New Zealand’s Parliamentary Buildings or just enjoy a walk through the city’s quirkiest destinations including a hot spot for Ugly Bagels.

Windy Wellington truly is a sight to behold if you are interested in the historical or political relevance of New Zealand. But don’t let that detract from the beauty of the beaches, Mount Victoria or the Wellington Botanical Gardens.

  1. Rotorua

Natural wonders abound in Rotorua. This thermal hotspot offers visitors a very unique experience and is a must-see on the list for most back-packers. With a variety of free walks through the thermal reserves you will be hard-pressed to find anything as intriguing as bubbling mud pools enriched with minerals with a backdrop of Maori culture to create the perfect holiday experience.

If the sulphurous geysers aren’t your thing then perhaps a trip to the Maori Cultural Village would be more suitable. Try a traditional Hangi, watch the Maori dances and rituals or bask at the beauty of the artwork.

  1. Queenstown

Undoubtedly, New Zealand’s party capital. Queenstown has it all, from gorgeous mountain views to adrenalin pumping bungies and an overwhelming number of world class pubs and restaurants. Have a cold one at the Minus 5 Degree Ice Bar with everything made from quintessential ice carvings or get your blood pumping as you dive off the highest bungy jump in New Zealand. Take a trip into Arrowtown, a must see in Autumn, or just meander through the streets, queue up for a Fergburger and embrace everything Qtown as to offer.
