An Expat’s Guide to Exploring Australia on the Weekends

  • April 23, 2018
  • admin

Australia is a vast continent with so much variety. For an expat who has disposable income and freedom to get away on the weekends, let’s look at some areas that are accessible and offer a few days away from the work grind. Maybe you need a car to get around, it’s easy to apply for Latitude Car Loans and then have the flexibility to go on a quick road trip in between those gruelling weekdays at work.

First, decide where you’d like to go and what you’d like to do. Are you a foodie, into wine tasting, or outdoor activities? There are options for the intrepid explorer or the culture-seeking expert, no matter what your interests you can find them in a short Australian weekend break.

Continue reading below to for our expats guide to exploring Australia and learn how you can get the most out of Australia.

Wine Tasting

For wine connoisseurs, a break in Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, is just the thing. It is the oldest wine region in all of Australia, offering a vast array of wineries to visit. Take a day out with a tour company so you can taste wines at your leisure. Cellar Door Tours offers several options for tastings in small groups. It is the perfect way to spend a weekend, not have to worry about drinking while driving and take in the scenery with local artisan wines. Or, map your own tasting course, with a few stops and a nice lunch in between tastings.

Spa

Fancy a spa weekend? Head to Daylesford, a spa town just over 100 kilometres northwest of Melbourne. There are healing natural mineral waters which are the reason Daylesford has attracted tourists since the 1870’s and more recently become a mecca for those interested in a more bohemian vibe.

Spend the day at the Salus Spa at The Lake House, with a relaxing hot mineral spa in a treehouse, followed by a massage or other treatment. Wander the boutique shops or spend an evening with a gourmet meal. A small town, Daylesford is a great getaway from big city life. There are festivals throughout the year, so check the calendar for one that may interest you, or to know when to avoid the town if you prefer a more tranquil and less crowded stay.

Beach

Beach and outdoor lovers, the perfect weekend away is just north of Brisbane in Noosa, on what is known as the Sunshine Coast. Pristine, beautiful beaches await you. Spend the day soaking up the sun, go surfing, walk trails or ride horseback, the choice is yours. Take a country drive and wind your way along the coastline.

Culture

Lover of all things cultural? Spend a weekend exploring the many museums and culture of Australia’s capital city of Canberra. Visit impressive buildings such as Parliament House, a newer structure and Old Parliament House which is now the Museum of Australian Democracy, Australian War Memorial, National Gallery of Australia, National Museum of Australia, just to name a few of the many major sites in the city.

The Australian National Botanical Gardens and National Zoo and Aquarium are worthwhile sights for nature-lovers. Canberra Glassworks offers classes and tours with glass artwork on display as well. There are large parks including the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve to explore nature, only a short drive from the city centre.

Get the Most Out Of Australia

No matter what you enjoy doing in your spare time, there is something for everyone within a few hours of every major city in Australia. Enjoy the sunshine, nature, cultural events, festivals, or gourmet treats. No matter your budget, you can find something just a few hours’ drive away for a relaxing weekend break.
