Los Angeles: More Than Just the Academy Awards

  • March 3, 2014
  • Jules

The eyes of the world are firmly fixed on Los Angeles at the moment, as Awards Season began with the 86th Academy Awards this weekend. But aside from the glitz, the glamour and the celebrities that reside in California’s most populous city, what else can the ‘City of Angels’ offer visitors this year?

Cultural Attractions for All

One thing that many people say about Los Angeles, or ‘LA’ as it’s more commonly known, is that there is no shortage of things to see, do and eat. What’s more, those who have booked flights to Los Angeles for the first time this year may be in for more cultural history and heritage than they imagine from a trip to the most glamorous city in California.

In 2014, a number of very famous attractions in LA hit important milestones. The Walt Disney Music Hall turns 10 this year, The Music Center marks its 50th anniversary, and the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) which opened in 1979, turns 35. Each institution is set to mark these anniversaries with special events and programming that visitors and locals alike will flock to see.

One of the most popular evergreen attractions is Universal Studios Hollywood, which is one of the oldest and most famous of the Hollywood film studios still in use. Visitors can take guided tours of the studio and enjoy the best that the theme park has to offer, including Revenge of the Mummy: The Ride and the virtual reality The Simpsons rollercoaster.

Festivals and Celebrations

Los Angeles is a multicultural city, and this is reflected in the many festivals and celebrations that take place there throughout the year, such as the Annual Golden Dragon Parade in Chinatown on the 1st of February and the Fiesta Broadway in Downtown on April 27th. Elsewhere, the Nsei Week Japanese Festival in Little Tokyo takes place every August, while horror fans will do well to head straight to the Halloween Costume Carnaval, the world’s largest Halloween street party, in late October.

In fact, there’s always something happening in LA, and downtown LA is no exception. The BET Experience, which runs from June 27th – June 29th, is a three-day event that celebrates culture, music and entertainment that coincides with the annual BET Awards at Nokia Theatre L.A Live on June 29th.

Whatever the time of year, Los Angeles is a great destination to travel to, whether you’re a lone traveller, travelling in a group or on holiday with small children. So, why not book a trip to LA for later in the year and see where the City of Angels will take you?
