Tracking down the coolest nightclubs in all of Glasgow

  • January 17, 2014
  • Jules

When you’re on holiday, there’s little better than letting your hair down, painting the town red, pumping up your joie de vivre, and all those other sayings implying fun.

And, while some people choose to get plastered on a Club 18-30 holiday while listening to popular tunes, the more, shall we say, discerning clubber wants to find those hip hangouts that bristle with uniqueness.

That’s where a holiday to Glasgow comes in.

Although this bustling city offers a number of nightclubs that play the radio hits of the day, it’s also one of the best places in the UK to find an off-the-grid joint playing weird and wonderful tunes that you won’t be able to stop dancing to.

And, with flats to rent in nearby Paisley and the heart of Glasgow, you could even consider settling down or staying a little longer after your club-packed visit.

So, here’s a rundown of some of the finest clubs in all of Glasgow.

The Arches

A grand cavern of a building, The Arches has repeatedly been in DJ Magazine’s list of the top 100 nightclubs in the world. It’s a reputation that’s well deserved, with a proud history of epileptic rave and techno tunes loud enough to make the brick-lined walls of this impressive building shake.

The Flying Duck

Now for somewhere a bit… weirder.

The Flying Duck prides itself on being the alternative to the alternatives, offering an unconventional layout, a Sega Mega Drive to play, a nude life-drawing club in the daytime and a fully vegan menu before 10pm.

Effectively, it’s filled a niche in the market by offering almost every niche you could think of.

In terms of club nights, the music range is broad, with indie music sitting right alongside 60s’ soul and funk in one week alone. So, pop along to The Flying Duck to hang out with the kitsch crowd and try out the left-of-centre.

Stereo

A bohemian retreat from the city centre, by day Stereo is a cool bar serving great food, and by night it’s a haunt for the artier types of Glasgow, offering a varied series of music acts that will satisfy those searching for something different.

From arts festival fundraisers to experimental techno evenings, hip hop nights to art exhibitions, Stereo is the place to go when variety and culture are what you want from a club. And, no matter what you get there, the atmosphere is nothing less than electric.

Sub Club

Founded in 1987, the Sub Club has managed to stay relevant by giving time to DJs with unique and inimitable styles.

Bringing in talent from all around the world, and boasting a varied array of club nights – reggae, techno, electronica and house are just a few of the musical styles on offer – you’ll struggle to find a better established and entertaining nightclub in Scotland.
