Celebrate the International Day of Peace 2013

  • September 21, 2013
  • Jules

Each year on 21 September, the world marks International Day of Peace with communities encouraged to get involved and take action.

The event stems from ‘Peace One Day’ which was founded by Englishman Jeremy Gilley who is both an actor and filmmaker. He wanted to create a 24 hour period where all arms would be laid to rest to allow UN staff and aid agencies to go about their tasks safely. The non-profit organisation promotes education, non-violence and world peace. In 2001 the efforts of Peace One Day were recognised with the official adoption of the International Day of Peace. The 21st of September each year was set aside as the day of non-violence and respect of the global ceasefire. More details on Jeremy Gilley and the Peace One Day news, action and education can be found on the official website. You can also follow Jeremy Gilley’s Twitter feed for inspirational tweets and up to date information.

One of the Peace One Day ambassadors is British actor Jude Law, who presents the video above. It forms part of the 24 hour Global Broadcast for Peace where live content will be streamed from all over the globe.

Taking part is The Hague in The Netherlands which is hosting a special celebration concert with performances from international artists such as Natasha Bedingfield, Paul van Dyk and Kane. It’s especially poignant as the concert and 24 our broadcast will take place in front of the Peace Palace in The Hague. Medellín in Colombia will host a special Peace Day concert and Jeremy Gilley will screen his special ‘Peace One Day The Journey’ documentary.

More details on how to get involved in 2013 are on the official Peace One Day site.
