Activity Holidays Above the Arctic Circle

  • August 24, 2013

Can you imagine anything more exciting than staying at a log cabin retreat in the heart of the Arctic Circle: trying activities such as snowmobiling and snowshoeing by day, and toasting your toes by a roaring fire by night?

Husky Safari

There is no better way to travel across the Arctic Circle than on a sled pulled by a team of huskies. These dogs have been raised in the harsh climate of the Arctic and will safely pull you across the frozen lakes and snow. The dogs are mainly Alaskan and Siberian huskies and are a mix of male and female, with the females usually taking the lead and using their intelligence to navigate the trails and the males providing the speed and power due to their sheer strength. They are enormously friendly towards humans and there’s nothing quite like having a strong team of huskies pull you on sleds. The activity of sledding dates back over 3 millennia when the dogs were used to transport the natives of the North America and Siberia. It is a relatively new practice in Scandinavia and today it’s a popular experience with travellers.

Snowmobile Safari

Snowmobiling is perfect for those who prefer a more updated means of transport across the Arctic. It is also a lot of fun and popular among travellers but it’s not for the faint hearted! You must be in good physical condition and have handled a snowmobile before you go on a snowmobile safari. The machines themselves are pretty powerful and cross the landscape at high speeds. The on-site guides will take you through the basics and fully equip you for your Arctic adventure, click here for more information.

That said, many travellers find that once they have tried a snowmobile safari, they are addicted and cannot wait to come back again! The undoubted highlight of traversing the winter wonderland landscape on a snowmobile is experiencing the converging borders of Sweden, Finland and Norway. Seeing where these three Scandinavian countries meet is a popular option for travellers who want to get up close to the raw untouched beauty of the Arctic Circle.

Snowshoeing

For those who like to explore at their own pace, snowshoeing is the perfect activity. Just strap the special shoes on and take a walk out onto the snow. It takes a little getting used to but soon you’ll find your stride. The snowshoes distribute your body weight over a larger area so that you won’t sink in the snow when you walk. They make for a wonderful hiking experience and offer a magnificent way to see the crisp, clean beauty of the Arctic Circle up close.

Exploring the Arctic Circle is a once in a lifetime adventure and staying overnight in a log cabin will really complete the experience. Relax in your own cabin, get a good hearty meal cooking over the fire and relax those muscles that you’ve exercised all day by mushing the dogs across the beautiful white landscape. Watch the sun set, toast your toes and curl up under the thick blankets.
