The pretty seaside town of St Ives in Cornwall is blessed with gorgeous golden beaches, quaint cobbled lanes and an abundance of craft shops and galleries. And the warm summer season continues into September, when the town is buzzing with special festivals and events.
St. Ives September Festival – 14-28 September 2013
The St. Ives September Festival attracts visitors from all over the world to participate in the celebration of music and art. The main Performances and concerts are held at The Guildhall, The St. Ives Theatre and The Western Hotel, but there are many other smaller events held in clubs and pubs around town. Many of the music events in clubs and pubs are free of charge and offer a rousing good time. Our advice is to opt for cottage holidays in St Ives so you can partake in the local merriment and be close to the action.
There are music performances, art exhibitions, walking tours, talks on various subjects, films, workshops, comedy, poetry and much more at various venues in the city. This year the Film Theme is Monster Films and they are held at the St. Ives Arts Club. Famous old favourites such as Frankenstein, The Mist, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, An American Werewolf in London, Nosferatu and more will be shown for anyone looking for a good scare.
Workshops include pottery making, oil painting and poetry writing. The music and comedy include over 25 different participants including country, jazz and rock. The Open Studios present ceramics, textiles, painting and mixed media for the pleasure and education of visitors.
The West End Experience – 5-8 September 2013
The West Experience is a fantastic presentation of great music from famous musicals both past and present. Songs from Grease, We Will Rock You, Chicago, Les Miserables, The Lion King, Dirty Dancing and many more are presented in a spectacular extravaganza. The four day event is held at the town’s Guildhall.
Kidz R Us September – 2-4 September 2013
Kidz R Us is a registered charity that is dedicated to helping young people develop through practical engagement in the performing arts. It increases their confidence and maturity, and hundreds of children have participated since it was started 16 years ago. It offers high quality amateur performances.
This September they will offer productions of: The Wizard of Oz on September 2nd, Les Miserables on September 3rd and Honk! A story based on The Ugly Duckling September 4th.
The Tate, St. Ives
There are only four Tate Museums in England, including one in St. Ives, which is in recognition of its commitment to art culture. The Summer Season 2013 continues through to September 29th and is open every day. It is a mixed exhibition of historic and contemporary work that is drawn from the Tate collection.
On Sunday, 15th September from 11:00am – 3:00pm, The Tate offers a special Super Sunday event where families can investigate art with hands-on activities and explore the galleries.
Leach Pottery Exhibition – On until 16 September 2013
The Third Generation is a pottery exhibition offered by Bernard Leach’s grandsons. Leach Pottery is considered one of the most influential and respected studio potteries in the world. Over the last century, students and apprentices have trained at the studio creating a small international arts community in the heart of Cornwall. The designs are famous for their exchange of Eastern and Western styles. Visiting the museum as well as the thriving studio is a delight for anyone interested in artistic expression and especially for those with a passion for pottery.
