How To Choose The Right Cruise For First Timers

  • July 20, 2013
  • Jules

Cruises have become more and more popular recently, with more travellers opting for this unique way to experience a multitude of exciting destinations in one journey. And for first timer cruisers, you can still enjoy travelling like a pro if you choose the right cruise. Follow our tips and pointers and you’ll wonder what took you so long to discover the pleasure of a cruise break.

Our first top tip for first time cruise travellers is to carry out loads of research on the myriad of destinations and options that are out there. Yes, the internet is a great place to start, but this should not be the only method you employ. It’s also good to seek recommendations from friends, family and colleagues who have already experienced a cruise. Encourage them to share their good and bad experiences to give you a balanced overview.

Planning A Cruise In Three Simple Steps

Planning a cruise for the first time is a fairly straightforward three step process. Initially, travellers should contact a reliable cruise expert to discuss all the possible options. A reputable consultant will question you about your likes as well as dislikes. Alongside this, it’s also important to take some time to study cruise brochures and check out the accommodation choices as well as the itineraries. Check, and question precisely what’s included and what will cost extra. The second step involves the actual reservation process via the cruise consultant. Lastly comes the pre-cruise planning and packing, which is a little different to regular holidays. For instance, you’ll need adequate insurance, up to date immunisations and valid visas for all the destinations on your itinerary. Again, your agent will be able to steer you in the right direction.

Selecting the Best Cruise for First timers

In selecting the best cruise for first timers, there are several things that must be considered;

• Budget – When selecting for a cruise, consider the actual cost of the cruise, plus extra day-to-day costs such as excursions and tips (which often aren’t included). Then you can set your budget accordingly. However, due to the popularity of cruises many of the liner companies are offering special promotions, which can actually significantly lower the costs. In particular last minute trips often prove to be very cost effective so do consider the option to book last minute cruise deals to really maximise your budget. And remember that cruises are incredibly flexible: you can always re-jig your dates and destinations to fall in line with your requirements.

• Duration – Cruises come in all shapes and sizes, typically anywhere from three day minibreaks, right through to three week adventures that can take in whole continents. You and your travelling companions should make a must-see wishlist and take it from there. Typically the flights to and from the start and end point are the most expensive element, so whilst there you should try to fit in as many days sailing as you can. Holiday allowance permitting of course!

• Expectations – Be sure to manage the expectations of your whole travel party, for example, are you traveling as a couple, family or party? Couples may prefer a more laidback and casual cruise, whilst families may want non-stop activities and kids clubs. For those on honeymoon or celebrating a special occasion, you may prefer a luxurious cruise liner where it’s obligatory to get dressed up every night.

One thing I can assure you is that with a cruise, the world really is your oyster!
