Destination Inspiration for Foodies

  • July 14, 2022
  • Jules

Exploring new traditions, looking at various styles of architecture, and enjoying different landscapes is all fascinating. But for a foodie, food is perhaps the most significant factor in their travel plans.

From hearty comfort foods like fried chicken and mashed potatoes to strange delicacies such as fried tarantulas. And from spicy, flavorful curries to sweet, light-as-air pastries, the world has so much to offer the food lover.

If you’re a foodie and looking for your next stop around the world, here are some ideas.

Asia

Hong Kong, China

If you love shopping, Hong Kong is the city for you. But besides its superb shopping scene, Hong Kong offers a unique multicultural experience, with the local culture being a blend of Western lifestyle and Chinese customs.

As a result, the city offers delicious food from around the world while specializing specifically in Cantonese cuisine. Some must-try dishes in Hong Kong include:

  • Dim Sum
  • Sweet and sour pork
  • Wontons
  • Roast goose
  • Char siu pork

If you can’t afford a trip to Hong Kong, you should consider bringing Cantonese cuisine to your home. That’s because it’s a must-try! Many catering services bring specialized cuisines to your home, no matter where you’re located (like this Malibu option).

New Delhi, India

Home to grand Mughal monuments such as the Qutub Minar and Jama Masjid, New Delhi boasts a mixture of historical architecture native to the South Asian region as well as modern Western-style buildings.

While known for its spicy curries, North Indian food has much more to offer than just spice. Your visit to New Delhi should include a taste of the following dishes:

  • Street food including samosas, various chaats, and kebabs
  • Indian sweets such as boondi ke laddu and kaju barfi
  • Curries including daal, tikka masala, and paneer butter masala

Africa

Marrakech, Morocco

Marrakech is a gorgeous fusion of the modern and historical, of the West and the East, and of the manmade with the natural. While the Medina or old city of Marrakech with its narrow streets and red walls expresses the heart of Moroccan culture, the city is surrounded by deserts and mountains.

Although known as the city of luxury, Marrakech offers mouthwatering street food along with its fine dining restaurants. Some delicious dishes and snacks the city offers are:

  • Msemens (Moroccan pancakes)
  • Kefta (seasoned ground meat)
  • Merguez kebabs (red, spicy sausage)
  • Méchoui (whole lamb cooked on a spit)

Europe

Lyon, France

Lyon is no less than Paris when it comes to putting France on the map in terms of gastronomy. As the country’s culinary capital, Lyon offers great local produce and cheese.

The city also has more restaurants per capita than all other cities of France and is home to world-renowned chefs.

Many of the city’s famous dishes feature potatoes, meat, and bechamel sauce. Some local specialties to try are:

  • Gâteau de foies de volaille (chicken liver cake)
  • Quenelle (fish dumpling)
  • Le saucisson lyonnais à cuire (sausages with potato gratin)
  • La tarte à la praline (almond cake covered in sugar)

North America

Mexico City, Mexico

Mexico City has something to offer everyone — art galleries for the art connoisseur, a thriving nightlife for the party lover, and the highest number of museums in any capital city in the world for the lifelong learner.

As the cheapest capital to visit in North America, Mexico City is accessible and affordable for many travelers. It offers not only cheap and delicious roadside offerings but also gourmet experiences at its fine dining establishments.

On your visit to Mexico City, be sure to try:

  • Tacos
  • Tamales
  • Quesadillas
  • Tlacoyos
  • Gorditas
  • Mole
  • Churros

South America

Santiago, Chile

Usually overlooked in favor of Buenos Aires, Argentina or Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Chile’s capital, Santiago, offers immense potential for exploration.

Located about an hour from the Andes, you can conveniently take a skiing trip during your stay in Santiago. While you’re there, the Human Rights Museum and the gorgeous street art are must-sees.

Along with tasting the finest Chilean wines at the city’s vineyards, be sure to indulge in the wonderful street food the city offers. Walk to a food truck or street vendor for:

  • Completos (Chilean hot dogs)
  • Empanadas
  • Sopapillas (fried pastries)

Australia

Adelaide, Australia

Big, busy cities with their hustle and bustle are fascinating. But sometimes, you just want to take a relaxing trip to a city that is gentle, peaceful, and beautiful. Abundant with parks and gardens, and surrounded by hills in the east and beaches in the west, Adelaide is a great city to relax in.

On top of that, as the food capital of Australia, Adelaide’s restaurants and cafés are proud to offer their local produce. Foodies can engage in a number of culinary experiences including taking a tour of the markets or watching cheese being made.

Some local foods you must try on your trip to Adelaide include:

  • Coffin Bay King Oysters
  • Cheese including Allium Piper and Goat On A Hot Tin Roof
  • Pie floater
