Enter Our Exciting Competition
If you’re a keen traveller, why not use your trip as material for our travel writing competition? Ending in September, you have plenty of time to plan the trip of a lifetime and pen a piece that inspires fellow jet setters.
With PureTravel, you’ll be a part of something special. Our network is made up of over 250 writers and contributors, who have helped turn PureTravel into a leading travel blog.
The PureTravel Blog was planned in 1999, long before it was launched in 2009. In the intervening decade, attitudes of the travelling public changed a great deal. Documenting your trips is a wonderful way to capture the world in a particular time period.
Why Enter this Travel Writing Competition?
Travel writing can be incredibly moving and powerful. It includes everything: stories of survival, human connection, a snapshot of a particular part of the world at a specific time in history. At its best, like travel itself, it helps us see the world differently.
From Marco Polo and Lawrence of Arabia to modern writers like Cheryl Strayed, many writers have documented their self-transformation through travel writing.
Our theme this year is a ‘turning point’, whether it’s witnessing conservation in action, a volunteering experience, or becoming a more eco-conscious traveller.
Catch Rays this Summer with Our Budget-Friendly Holidays
If you’re based in the UK, you’ll know that times have been hard for sunseekers. Although we’ve enjoyed glimpses of warm weather recently, the past two summers have been highly disappointing.
Our blog makes it much easier to find sunny destinations that are ideal for travellers on a budget. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
If you’re after sun-drenched destinations without the hefty price tag, there are plenty of affordable places where you can bask in the warmth, whether you prefer beachside lounging, cultural exploration, or outdoor adventures. Here are some of the best budget-friendly destinations for sun seekers.
Albania
Despite having captivating beaches that rival those of Greece and Italy, Albania has remained one of Europe’s best-kept secrets. It’s not only just as beautiful as the aforementioned destinations, it’s much cheaper.
Ksamil, Dhermi, and Himarë are truly magical, with turquoise waters and golden sands. They’re also ideal for affordable summer get-aways, since there’s plenty of quality but cheap accommodation.
You will also enjoy delectable food at great prices, from fresh seafood to traditional dishes like
byrek and tavë kosi without breaking the bank. Entrance fees to historical sites like Butrint National Park are also extremely reasonable.
Turkey
If you’re a sun-seeker on a budget, Turkey ticks all the right boxes. In particular, the Turquoise Coast is a fantastic destination, with areas like Antalya, Fethiye and Bodrum known for their magical beaches, ancient ruins, and lively markets.
There are plenty of affordable guest-houses and all-inclusive resorts. Adventurous activities like boat trips and paragliding cost far less than in Western Europe.
Portugal
Although Portugal is becoming more expensive, the Algarve region remains a relatively affordable destination for those who love their sunshine. This part of Portugal has golden beaches and charming fish villages that are worth exploring.
Towns like Lagos, Albufeira, and Tavira offer affordable accommodation, especially if you’re not travelling during the peak season.
Many wonderful activities here are free, such as hiking along the coast or exploring historical sites.
Mexico
If you’re after some of the world’s best beaches, Mexico should be high on your list.
The Yucatán Peninsula, including Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, is home to some of the most captivating beaches. You can also explore unforgettable Mayan ruins, and cenotes.
Accommodation ranges from budget hostels to affordable beachfront hotels. Public transport is inexpensive, so it’s easy to get around.
Thailand
Ever since our blog was first proposed in 1999, Thailand has been a popular destination for budget travellers chasing the sun.
Islands like Koh Samui, Koh Tao and Koh Lanta offer pristine beaches, clear waters, and affordable bungalows by the sea. Good food is incredibly cheap, and public transport, including ferries between islands, is reasonably priced.
Avoid tourist traps like Phuket and your money will stretch even further.
Morocco
‘Sun-soaked’ is a good way to describe many travellers’ experiences in Morocco. From its beaches and deserts to its exciting cities, it’s an unforgettable place to visit.
If you’re looking for specific areas, Agadir is famed for its long sandy beaches and year-round sunshine. Meanwhile, Essaouira has a more laid-back coastal vibe.
Accommodation, food and transport are highly affordable, and you can enjoy local dishes like tagine and couscous for just a few pounds.
The Philippines
Want to travel further this summer? The Philippines is a paradise for budget-conscious sun seekers.
The country’s 7,000+ islands offer some of the finest beaches on the planet, including El Nido and Siargao. Basic accommodation is cheap, and domestic transport, including ferries and buses, is budget-friendly.
Egypt
Egypt has sunshine all year round, along with a fascinating history and affordable beach resorts. If you love diving and snorkelling, The Red Sea destinations of Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh are ideal.
Hotels, food, and transport are all cheap compared to many European destinations, and you can explore ancient wonders like the Pyramids of Giza or Luxor’s temples for relatively little money.
More Expert Tips for Budget Travel
Although summer is popular, many of these destinations are warm all year round. You might want to book outside the most popular seasons to snap up the best flights and accommodation. Booking way in advance is also beneficial. It usually means you can secure lower prices.
