Travel Advice: What to do After a Car Accident in Columbia, MO

  • June 13, 2024
  • Robert

Columbia is the most populous city in central Missouri with over 126,000 residents. Located along the Missouri River, it is home to the University of Missouri and known for its parks, attractions, and universities. Founded in 1820, Columbia has grown into a thriving city over the past two centuries.

However, with a large population and many major roadways intersecting in Columbia, car accidents are common in the city. In 2021 alone, there were over 1,600 crashes reported, including 12 that were fatal. Major crash hotspots in Columbia include the Stadium Boulevard/I-70 interchange and Paris Road. Common causes for accidents include failure to yield, distracted driving, and following too closely.

If you are unfortunate enough to be involved in a car accident while visiting or living in Columbia, there are important steps to take immediately afterward.

Assess the Situation

The first thing to do after a car accident is assess the situation. Make sure that you and any passengers are uninjured or receive medical attention right away if needed. If the vehicles are moveable and there are no injuries, move out of the flow of traffic onto the shoulder. Turn on your hazard lights and set up road flares or triangles behind the vehicles to alert other drivers. If the vehicles cannot be moved, keep your seatbelt on and call 911.

Exchange Information

Once the initial situation has been addressed, exchange contact and insurance information with the other driver involved. Make sure to collect their name, phone number, address, license plate, driver’s license number, and insurance details. Share the same information from your side as well. Photograph the damage to both vehicles and the scene of the accident using your smartphone, which can help document what happened.

Get Witness Statements

If there were any witnesses to the accident, request their contact information and written statements on what they observed. Their accounts could be very useful in determining fault later on. Ask witnesses to briefly describe what they saw, including details about the vehicles, what happened, and the circumstances leading up to the crash.

Contact Your Insurance Provider

As soon as possible after the accident, call your car insurance provider to inform them of the situation. Provide details about the time, location, damage to the vehicles, injuries, and other parties involved. They can discuss what to do next regarding claim procedures, arranging for repairs, covering rental car costs, and initiating any legal action.

Get Seen by a Medic or Doctor

Even if you do not have noticeable injuries immediately after the crash, consider getting examined by a medical professional soon afterward. Symptoms from whiplash, concussions, or other issues sometimes do not materialize until hours or days later. Seeking prompt medical care not only addresses any underlying problems, but also documents evidence in case you need to make an injury claim later.

Consult an Attorney in Columbia, MO

According to Schultz Myers, a top-rated Columbia car accident lawyer, for accidents that result in major vehicle damage, injuries, or complex legal circumstances, it can be very beneficial to speak with an attorney. They can advise you on your options, ensure the insurance settlement is fair, file claims on your behalf, represent you in court if necessary, and help recover damages. Having legal guidance after a significant car accident in Columbia can relieve stress and strengthen your position.

By staying calm, following these steps, and seeking help from professionals like insurance agents, medical providers, and attorneys, you can ensure the aftermath of your car accident is dealt with properly.
