Tips to Avoid Car Accidents on Vacation in Las Vegas, NV and What to Do When One Occurs

Heading to Las Vegas for a vacation? With its bright lights, bustling casinos, and endless entertainment options, Sin City is a popular destination for tourists from around the world. However, with more vehicles on the road, the potential for car accidents increases. Use these tips to avoid accidents during your Las Vegas getaway and learn what steps to take if you do get into a crash.

Know the Rules of the Road

Las Vegas roads may have different laws than what you’re used to back home. For example, right turns on red lights are permitted after coming to a complete stop, unless otherwise posted. U-turns are legal as long as you yield to oncoming traffic. Be sure to brush up on Nevada traffic laws before getting behind the wheel so you don’t inadvertently break any rules of the road.

Avoid Alcohol Before Driving

With Las Vegas being home to world-famous bars, clubs, and casinos, drinking and driving is a huge risk. Never operate a vehicle if you’ve had any amount of alcohol or other intoxicating substances. Arrange for alternate transportation like a taxi, ride share, or public transit. Getting behind the wheel after drinking puts everyone on the road in immense danger. According to 2021 data, 40% of crashes in the Las Vegas metro area were caused by a drunk driver.

What to Do After an Accident

According to Jamie Cogburn (here), a Las Vegas auto accident lawyer, if you do get into a collision while vacationing in Las Vegas, you should stay calm and follow these steps:

  • Assess the Situation – Check for injuries and call 911 immediately if anyone needs medical attention. Move to a safe location out of traffic, if possible.
  • Collect Information – Exchange insurance and contact details with the other driver(s) involved. Get their name, license plate, insurance provider, policy number, phone number, and address.
  • Document the Scene – Take photos of damage, skid marks, and the position of each vehicle. Get images of the roadway, weather, and traffic signs or signals.
  • File a Report – Notify the police so an official report can be filed. Providing details soon after the incident while it’s still fresh in your mind is important.
  • Contact Your Insurer – Alert your insurance company about the accident and start a claim if needed. Cooperate fully with their investigation process. Keep copies of police reports and other documentation.
  • Seek Medical Care – Even if you don’t notice injuries right away, see a doctor to get checked out. Symptoms of whiplash, concussions, and other issues sometimes show up later.
  • Consult an Attorney – For serious crashes involving major property damage, injuries, or fatalities, contacting a lawyer residents recommend can help protect your rights. They negotiate with insurance companies on your behalf and represent your best interests.

A car accident can quickly derail a fun Las Vegas vacation. Drive cautiously, avoid distractions, and understand what to do if the unfortunate still occurs. Taking smart precautions will help ensure you arrive home safely with great memories.
