Adventure awaits around every corner at the Italian Lakes. There are five major lakes in the district, each with its own unique character and attractions. Whether you’re a history buff looking to immerse yourself in some culture, or want to go off on an outdoor adventure, there is an activity for every visitor to enjoy.
Adventure Activities
Water sports
Take to the water to enjoy the lakes up close and personal. From windsurfing, sailing, kayaking and paddleboarding, there are so many options to choose from. Lake Tresimeno is the ideal place to get some practice in.
Hiking and Trekking
Italy is the perfect destination for hiking holidays, thanks to the many scenic routes and winding trails. Hike high above the Lake Maggiore through hills and forests or stroll along Lake Lugano and gaze across the lake into Switzerland beyond. There are a variety of options for both beginners and experienced hikers.
Cycling
If you prefer to travel on two wheels, you’re in luck. The Lakes are a cyclist’s dream come true. Ride along the gorgeous ‘Cicioplasta del Sole’ for breathtaking views of Lake Garda or get a good look at the abundance of waterbirds at Lake Iseo. Similar to the hiking, there are routes to accommodate all levels.
Paragliding
There is nothing quite like seeing the lakes and mountains from the air. Destinations like Monte Pizzocolo are popular spots for tandem paragliding where you can admire Lake Garda from above.
Cultural Experiences
Historic Villages
Ancient ruins, preserved water forts and palatial villas are waiting to be discovered. Lake Como is not home to some of the prettiest villages, but also those that are steeped in history. The 8th-century fishing village of Varenna is a must-visit while Sirmione is home to the Scaligero Castle.
Architecture and Landmarks
The Lakes have much to offer lovers of art and history. North of Desenzano, you’ll find the old headquarters of the Italian Foreign Ministry in the town of Salò or you can venture onto Southern shores to pay a visit to the ancient ruins of Grotte de Catullo.
Local Cuisine
Italy has some of the best cuisine in the world, but you’ll experience food on another level at the lakes. Fresh seafood is in abundance but if you’re not the biggest fan of fish, there is a heart mix of meat, pasta and crisp local wine.
Travel Tips
The best time to visit the Italian Lakes is during the spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October). You get to make the most of comfortable temperatures and avoid the big crowds that are common in summer. The Lakes are well connected by train and by bus, which are easy to navigate from airports in Milan and Verona.
