Whether you fancy walking hand in hand along the edge of a lake or admiring some stunning views with your loved one, the Lake District is at the top of the list when it comes to the most romantic spots that you will find in the UK.
However, there is a lot more to the Lake District than the great outdoors, and with that in mind we have put together a list of seven romantic activities you can do in the Lake District. While there are some outdoor activities on the list, we’ve also suggested some things to do that don’t rely on the weather!
1. Enjoy a spa day
The Lake District is home to some spectacular spas, so why not book a spa day for your and your loved one? This is the perfect way to really destress and unwind and spend time together without anything to get in the way of your relaxation. A couples massage can offer a great pause in the middle of your Lake District stay.
2. Stargazing
Once the weather gets a little warmer, why not take advantage of the fact that the Lake District is a good distance from the lights of the big cities and their light pollution? This means that it’s a great place to indulge in some stargazing. Make it the perfect romantic activity by packing some snacks and a rug so that you can spend an evening under the stars. The best locations to head to are Dockray, Grizedale or Whinlatter Forest
3. Romantic railways
There is something rather romantic about steam trains, as they represent a throwback to times gone by. There are 4 separate steam railway lines within the Lake District, so why not make plans to travel on at least one of them? They offer a great, unique way to admire the landscape. Some of them offer plenty of places to stop at, so with good weather you can make a day of it, have a little stroll and even partake of some afternoon tea along the way.
4. A gentle stroll or a spectacular hike
Depending on your prowess as a walker, there are plenty of walks within the Lake District and they offer, arguably, the best way to really make the most of the incredible scenery. You will find gentle walks that take you along the edge of a lake, ending in one of the many small villages where you will find a pub or tea room to refresh yourself before heading back to your starting point. If you prefer a bit of a challenge then remember you will need sturdy walking boots. Then you can head up to one of the peaks and the views will take your breath away.
Remember to make sure you have a good map and a charged phone, together with extra clothes in case of sudden changes in the weather.
5. Dinner a deux
The Lake District has more than its fair share of incredible places to eat, so whether you are looking for more bistro style cuisine, Michelin star restaurant dishes or something in between, you will find yourself spoilt for choice when it comes to selecting somewhere to have a romantic meal.
6. Hire a boat
Being out on one of the lakes will offer you an entirely different perspective of the scenery. We are not talking about hiring a kayak or canoe but rather a traditional rowing boat – and it doesn’t get much more romantic than that.
7. Take a scenic drive
Finally, if walking to the more elevated viewpoints isn’t your thing then why not plan a scenic drive that will not only allow you to see some of those views from up high? Going by car will also allow you to explore some of the lesser visited valleys with their equally breathtaking vistas.
