How to maximize your budget when traveling

  • July 12, 2022

If you’re like most people, budgeting for a trip can be a challenge. But with some planning and creativity, it is possible to save money and still have a fantastic time. With so many people embracing the nomadic tech lifestyle, longer trips are more achievable. We’ll discuss everything from where to stay to how to calculate your car shipping costs. Here are some tips for maximizing your budget when traveling extensively:

1. Planning your extended trip

Congratulations! Whether you’ve decided to work as a tech nomad or have taken the plunge to take a long vacation, extended travel can be an enriching experience. It provides a chance to see new places, meet new people, and learn new things. However, before you hit the road, there’s a lot to think about. Here are a few to consider while you plan your extended trip:

First, decide where you want to go. If you’re unsure, start by listing all the places you’ve always wanted to visit. Once you have your list, narrow it down by considering factors like climate, cost of living, and safety.

Next, figure out how you will support yourself on the road. Will you work as you travel, or will you save enough money to cover your expenses in advance?

Then, consider your tech needs. Do you need a laptop for work? What about a phone or tablet for staying connected with family and friends? And don’t forget about insurance- ensure your devices are covered in case of loss or theft.

Also, consider how you’ll travel once you’ve reached your destination. Should you rent a car or ship your car from home? Many cities you travel in will have mass transit or highly walkable neighborhoods, but exploring further distances will be easier when you have a car to drive.

Lastly, think about who you want to travel with. Do you want to go it alone, or would you like to take your best friend, family, partner, or dog?

2. Booking your flight and lodgings

There’s more to planning a vacation than just booking your flight. You’ll also need to find a place to stay, and there are a few different options.

If you’re looking for a hotel, you can use a booking website like Expedia or Hotels.com or discuss your options with your favorite travel specialist. You might want to consider a hostel if you’re looking for something with fewer amenities and a lower price tag.

If you’re looking for a more private and home-like experience, you can look into short-term rentals like Airbnb. No matter what kind of accommodation you’re looking for, do your research to find the best option for your needs.

3. Packing for your trip

Packing light is the way to go when packing for your trip. Packing everything but the kitchen sink can be tempting, but try to resist the urge. Instead, focus on packing only what you need.

  • Make a packing list and be ruthless about what you need. Only pack the essentials.
  • Invest in multipurpose items that can do double duty. For example, a scarf can be used as a blanket or pillow on a plane.
  • Roll your clothes instead of folding them. This will save space in your suitcase and prevent wrinkles.
  • Wear your heaviest items on the plane. This includes things like a jacket and shoes.

Once you’ve pared down your belongings, pack them efficiently in a suitcase or backpack. With a little bit of planning and a heavy bit of restraint, packing light will make your travel experience much more enjoyable.

4. Eating on a budget while traveling

Dining on a budget while traveling can be challenging, but it is possible to find affordable meals if you know where to look. One way to save money is to cook meals instead of dining out. This can be especially helpful if you stay in a hotel or vacation rental with a kitchen.

If you decide to eat out, look for restaurants offering specials or discounts. You can also search for coupons online or in local newspapers. Another option is ordering smaller portions or sharing a meal with a friend.

And finally, don’t be afraid to ask your hotel staff for dining recommendations. They can often suggest places that offer good value for your money. You can enjoy delicious food without breaking the bank with little effort.

5. Sightseeing on a budget

Adventure doesn’t have to be expensive, and some of the best experiences are the ones that don’t cost a dime. The key is to keep your eyes open and your mind opens to possibilities. Here are a few tips for sightseeing on a budget:

  • Get up early and go for a walk or run. Not only will you see things you missed the night before, but you’ll also get some exercise in!
  • Stop and talk to people. Locals always know the best spots to check out and are usually more than happy to share their knowledge.
  • Ask around for free events or activities. There are often plenty of free things to do, from art galleries to concerts, if you look for them.
  • Carry a camera with you and take lots of photos. Not only will you have memories of your adventure, but you might even end up with some great shots for your Instagram feed!

6. Drive your car by shipping it ahead of your trip

Why not take your vehicle with you on your extended trip? It’s easier than you might think. All you need to do is ship your car ahead of time. International car shipping costs can vary, but it’s typically a fairly reasonable expense.

Once you have your car with you, you’ll have the freedom to explore at your own pace without relying on public transportation or rental cars. Just be sure to get all the necessary paperwork in order before you go. A little advanced planning can make driving in foreign countries a breeze.
