How To Search For Hidden Cameras When Traveling

  • July 5, 2022
  • Jules

With strict Covid-19 regulations being lifted in countries across the globe, international travel is once again taking off. Tourists are excited about being allowed to go wherever they please!

Technology has played a big part in the way we travel in today’s modern world. You can book your flights, contact friends and family, and plan your entire trip with a smart device. Most people bring at least one device with them before going on a vacation.

Although having access to all this technology can benefit travelers, there are devices readily available that can be used to spy on people. There have been lots of reports over the past decade of tourists being spied on. From hidden cameras placed in travelers’ hotel bedrooms to listening devices installed in furniture at popular bars and restaurants.

The thought of someone watching your every move while in a private place is scary, which is why travelers should search for hidden cameras when they arrive at a hotel room.

Do people spy on others in a hotel?

Unfortunately, the answer is yes, spies often target hotels, motels, guesthouses, and holiday-inns. In 2019, just before the pandemic began interfering with international travel, over one thousand six hundred people were spied on while staying in various motels throughout South Korea’s capital, Seoul.

The gang of spies hid cameras in 42 rooms in different motels in the city. They then uploaded and streamed the videos to the internet, where people paid a fee to spy on others.

The gang hid the tiny cameras in TVs, sockets, and air conditioning units. The case caused uproar in the city, and it left people wondering about other locations where cameras might be hidden.

Find out what spy gear looks like

Before you set off on your travels, you might want to look into the different types of spy gadgets on the market. Spy equipment has been growing in popularity over the past few years, so you can find plenty of different types of hidden cameras availble.

When staying in accommodation while on vacation, check out the following areas:

  • Clocks: Tiny hidden cameras are often installed in a clock. If there is a clock in your room, then take a closer look to see if you notice a tiny lens.
  • Mirrors: The bathroom is a popular place to place a hidden camera. Sometimes these devices are installed in the mirror, so finding them can prove challenging.
  • Pens, keys, and door handles: Don’t be surprised if you find a lens in any of these items.

Buy a detector

Not all hidden camera detectors are large. Some are small, so you can easily pack them with the rest of your luggage. As soon as you check into your room, turn off every device in the room that connects to Bluetooth or WiFi, and check to see if there are any hidden cameras with your detector. The best detectors on the market are designed to hunt out bugs, but there is no guarantee that a detector will find a hidden device in your hotel.

If you come across a hidden camera, you should speak to the authorities immediately, or make contact with a lawyer for legal advice.

Is it against the law?

Just because you find a hidden camera in your hotel room, doesn’t mean someone has broken the law. Laws surrounding hidden cameras and other spy equipment vary from country to country. If you find one, find out if any laws have been broken. If you remove the hidden camera, you might find yourself in hot water with the authorities, especially if you caused extensive damage to the property.

Inform the management immediately before trying to remove it.

What if I don’t have a detector

Very few travelers pack a detector before going on vacation. If you are worried about being spied on, see if you can find unusual objects in the area. Switch off the lights, and keep to see if you can spot any night vision cameras.

There are apps out there that can help you locate hidden cameras. Unfortunately, not a lot of people have had success finding these devices with mobile apps, but it might be worth a shot.

Conclusion

With technology advancing, you can expect more spy gadgets to enter the market over the next few years. The more advanced the gear, the harder it is to find them. If you are confident someone is watching you, you might want to hire a professional spy service to help you find hidden devices. Professional spies will have advanced tools to help them locate hidden devices. Most private detectives that specialize in finding hidden spy gadgets have an official website so for more infrotmaion, visit their webpage.

If you travel for work, don’t be surprised if your competitors are watching your every move. Consider booking your accommodation the day before you arrive at the destination you plan on traveling to, so the people who are spying on you are kept on their toes.
