6 Car Shipping Mistakes to Avoid

  • March 24, 2022
  • Jules

Did you have a car shipped before, only to be left with a bitter taste in your mouth after an underwhelming experience? If that’s the case, it’s easy to see why you might choose to drive your vehicle the next time you’re traveling or moving. But is there any chance that a mistake could have been made on your part, creating the situation or making it worse?

You shouldn’t feel alone if you answered yes. Unfortunately, many people make mistakes before or during car shipping ventures. That’s why this list contains six common issues consumers experience. Knowing about them will only be beneficial in the end because it will increase your awareness and help you avoid making the same mistakes that so many others have made during car transport.

1. Not Comparing Quotes

Some vehicle owners simply choose the first auto transporter they find. They assume that their rates should be on par with other companies within the industry. However, that is often not the case. Businesses charge as they see fit. So, don’t make the mistake of not comparing quotes. Instead, get multiple auto transport quotes and shop around to ensure you get an excellent deal.

2. Not Checking Registration Requirements

Transport brokers and carriers in the United States are required to be registered with the FMCSA or Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Therefore, you should make it a point to perform carrier searches on the shippers you’re considering doing business with. You’ll want to be on the lookout for MC Docket and USDOT numbers, as auto transporters are issued both. Failing in this regard could lead to you getting scammed. Hence, make sure you check a company’s registration requirements.

3. Not Getting Insurance

Shippers have insurance to cover damages, but sometimes, there are catches, and certain things aren’t covered. The last thing you need is to be on that end when an accident happens. That might leave you on the hook for expensive auto bodywork or mechanical repairs. Thus, don’t make the mistake of not asking your insurer how much it would charge to cover the transport. That will provide you with peace of mind, knowing that you won’t have to spend a lot to get your ride fixed if something happens when it’s being shipped.

4. Not Looking For Existing Damages

You will also want to avoid making the mistake of not examining your car for existing damages. That is because finding them later could cause an argument between you and the shipper to break out. So, take the time to look for and document existing damages. Then, tell the company you use about the issues to prevent awkward conversations/confrontations from entering the picture.

5. Not Making Alternative Travel Arrangements

Forgetting to make alternative travel arrangements is a car shipping mistake you should definitely avoid. Imagine it; you send your vehicle off with a company and get stranded because you don’t have a flight or train ticket. That certainly wouldn’t be an ideal situation. Therefore, ensure that you have made all necessary travel arrangements.

6. Not Obtaining the Appropriate Documents

Vehicle owners must have particular documents to ship their cars cross-country. The company you use will be able to tell you exactly what paperwork is needed. However, to give you an idea of what’s necessary, the vehicle’s registration papers may have to be current. Not to mention, you’ll also probably need the car’s title. You’ll want to get this aspect right from the start because if you make a mistake, that could lead to a shipping delay and send extra charges your way.

Final Thoughts

When consumers make mistakes, they don’t always have the best car shipping experiences. If that isn’t what you want, take the time to read about these common issues to avoid and learn different ways to combat them. Then, hopefully, your auto transport will go off without a hitch.
