As Covid regulations gradually open up around the world many of us who have not been able to go on holiday are dreaming of taking a trip. And with winter approaching rapidly to those of us living in the northern climates, most of us are dreaming of warmth and sunshine on that holiday.
Mexico is a fantastic winter sun destination for many different reasons. Starting with the weather. Whilst we freeze at home Mexico is enjoying daily temperatures in the mid twenties over our winter months. They have plenty of sunshine and very little rain. In fact the winter in Mexico is the perfect time to go when it is not too hot but very pleasant and still warm enough to swim in the sea or the heated hotel pool.
There are many great places to choose to visit in Mexico – you really are spoilt for choice. Where you should go depends on what kind of holiday you are looking for. Do you want to spend your time relaxing at the beach? In which case one of the most popular areas to visit are Cancun and Cozumel. There are lots of fantastic beach resorts in these areas but one of the best is The Ocean Coral and Turquesa which lies on Punta Coral just south of the main town. Here you can relax on some of the finest white sand and enjoy the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea as well as enjoying the fabulous facilites offered by this beach resort.
The reason Cancun and Cozumel are so popular is because they are pretty much the perfect beach destinations. Glorious white sandy beaches are matched by warm turquoise waters making it perfect for swimming and enjoying watersports. They are both well developed beach resorts and have a wide range of hotels, restaurants, bars and nightclubs making them exciting and vibrant areas for visitors.
Cancun was once a small fishing village but its stunning location was soon discovered by travellers and it is now a thriving tourist resort on the north-east coast of the famous Yucatan peninsula. There is a downtown area which is where you can find the locals enjoying their cantinas and food stalls as well as bustling markets and shops. The other area is much newer and this is the main tourist area where you can find all the hotels, restaurants, shopping malls as well as many many bars and nightclubs. This area lies along the thing that draws most visitors – the huge white sandy beach which runs for over 20 kilometres.
The other reason people come to Mexico and the Yucatan in particular is the easily accessible historic attractions such as Tulum which is only an hour and half’s drive away from Cancun. Tulum is where the ruins of the ancient Mayan civilisation meet the ocean, where you can explore on foot the stunning ruined pyramidal temples sitting in a spectacular location above the cliffs facing the ocean. Definitely a unmissable spot for Instagrammers!
Another reason people flock from around the world to visit this area is the pretty island of Cozumel just off the coast south of Cancun. It is the largest of the Mexican islands in the Caribbean and boasts a long history with Mayan ruins and Spanish colonial architecture. As well as being a very pretty green and lush island it boasts stunning beaches again and it is also one of the top 5 diving destinations in the world. Most people will book either a diving or snorkelling expedition whilst here and you really should make the most of the crystal clear waters and superb coral reefs that can be found in Cozumel.
